Palisades residents still blocked from homes after mayor's assurance that they could return

President Donald Trump put Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass on the spot during a tense press conference last week, with many praising the president for his tough stance on her dismal efforts to get the city back on track. At the press conference, Trump called out Bass for not allowing Californians to come back to their destroyed homes to initiate clean-up efforts, causing Bass to give in and say that they would, in fact, be let back on their properties.

However, according to the Daily Mail, it appears that Mayor Bass wasn't being truthful when she made that promise, as new video surfaced that clearly shows that what she promised is not the case on the ground.

A Pacific Palisades resident filmed an encounter with U.S. Army personnel that revealed residents are still not allowed back to their properties.

What happened?

Dave Harvilicz, 50, who lives in the ritzy neighborhood that was one of the hardest hit in the area by the wildfires, still has no idea what the status of his property is.

"I haven't been able to get to the house since January 7th. It's January 25th. President Trump said we could go now - what's going on?" he said as he spoke with the military personnel on the ground.

"I'm not too sure sir," the soldier replied. "Unfortunately with us we play by ear. With LAPD, they talk to our command and then our command tells us what LAPD says."

After more back and forth with the solider, the resident was told that the only way he could get back to see his property was with a police escort, which is not only time consuming, but almost impossible to get.

Harvilicz, like many other residents in the area, were under the impression that they could return to their homes after Trump's meeting with Bass, when she clearly stated that it was possible for them to do so.

Social media reacts

Users across social media weighed in on the encounter with mixed reactions.

"The point Dave is making, is both POTUS and LA Mayor both stated LIVE ON PRESS CONFERENCE TO THE NATION that people could move unrestricted to their lots to start clean up. Nothing should be stopping them," one X user wrote.

Another X user wrote, "So what’s the reason people can’t enter the area? Makes zero sense. Show ID of address and let them through."

Only time will tell if Mayor Bass comes through on her promise or if it was just simply something she said to get the president off her back in the heat of the moment.

This only adds to the reasons why 153,000 people have signed a petition calling for Bass to resign over her handling of the wildfires.
