Pro-Palestinian protesters repeatedly disrupt former Speaker Pelosi's live interview with 'Late Show' host Colbert
The ongoing Democratic National Convention in Chicago has been a hotbed of protests and, at times, violent unrest by anti-Israel, pro-Palestinian activists who have loudly lambasted Democratic leaders over their expressed support for the Jewish nation amid the military conflict against Hamas in Gaza.
On Tuesday, some of those activists and protesters set their sights on former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and repeatedly disrupted a live interview she was engaged in with late-night comedian Stephen Colbert, according to USA Today.
The constant interruptions were too much to ignore and prompted Colbert on multiple occasions to directly admonish their discourteous and distracting behavior that marred his discussion with the prominent Democratic politician.
Pelosi's interview with Colbert disrupted repeatedly
"Late Show" host Colbert initially attempted to appease the disruptive protesters by promising to ask former Speaker Pelosi about the ongoing Israel-Hamas war in Gaza -- albeit after first discussing the sudden end of President Joe Biden's re-election bid a month earlier.
The protesters were only momentarily assuaged, however, and soon began to interrupt the conversation again with indecipherable shouts and slogans that only grew more fierce as Pelosi noted that Israel was justified in defending its sovereignty and seeing its hostages freed after it was "attacked by a terrorist organization," though she quickly added that "we don't want children killed in Gaza, and so we have to come up with a solution."
The protesters only grew more agitated at Pelosi's remarks, and Colbert said, "As you can see from the continuing protest out here, that answer is unsatisfying to some people, because they believe that the United States -- hold on one second -- would you like to respond to what they're saying? They've said that the United States should not have any role in supplying Israel arms to kill the people of Gaza."
Pelosi reiterated her belief that Israel "has a right to defend itself," which only sparked more angry disruptions from the pro-Palestinian protesters, and after Colbert's plea for them to "don't interrupt my guests" was essentially ignored, he quickly wrapped up the live interview.
Dozens arrested during DNC protests
According to the Associated Press, thousands of anti-Israel, pro-Palestinian protesters have been a constant and disruptive presence in and around the DNC in Chicago since the convention began on Monday.
On that first night, more than a dozen protesters were arrested after breaching a security fence during a "largely peaceful" demonstration, while at least 56 protesters were arrested Tuesday night after a crowd of anti-Israel protesters engaged in "vandalism" and "violence" and clashed with police outside the Israeli Consulate in Chicago.
The protesters have condemned the Democratic Party and its leaders for being "complicit" in a supposed "genocide" in Gaza by continuing to provide Israel with weapons while also providing insufficient support for ceasefire negotiations.
Pelosi has dealt with protesters many times before
To be sure, this is far from the first time that former Speaker Pelosi has been confronted and disrupted by anti-Israel, pro-Palestinian protesters and activists, as she has been repeatedly and consistently targeted by them almost since the conflict in Gaza began following the coordinated wave of Hamas terror attacks, murders, and kidnappings in Israel on October 7 last year.
That has included multiple protests outside Pelosi's home in San Francisco, California, as well as during speaking engagements, including at the Oxford Union and the Harvard Club of San Francisco, among others.
For her part, Pelosi has largely ignored or been dismissive of the protesters, though she did spark some controversy in January when she suggested that some of them were being paid and directed by Russia to foment internal discord in the U.S. and called for an FBI investigation of protest leaders and any possible financial ties to foreign adversaries.
