Rare split-party support by Arizona police union for Trump for president and Gallego in Senate race
The presidential candidates are splitting up the support from major groups, and the Arizona Police Union has split their ticket to support former President Donald Trump and Rep. Ruben Gallego, a US Senate candidate from the opposite party.
The association came out on Friday, saying they were endorsing the Republican candidate while appearing with Trump at a rally in Glendale, Arizona, as the New York Post reported.
Just days later, on Monday they announced they were also endorsing Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) a Democrat candidate for U.S. Senate.
“On behalf of the Arizona Police Association, we are proud to welcome President Trump to the great state of Arizona,” the group’s president, Justin Harris, said at the former president’s rally.

Although the association supported Republican Kari Lake for governor in 2022, they chose to ignore her in her Senate campaign this year and instead favor her Democratic opponent.
In the incredibly tight race for the state's first congressional district seat, the union is endorsing a combination of Democrats and Republicans this cycle, including former state representative Amish Shah (D) and Republican David Schweikert (R).
“As a Marine combat veteran, we know Congressman Gallego understands the complexities of modern policing in American society today, while at the same time recognizing the public’s expectations,” Harris said in a Monday statement.
He also pointed out that Gallego has put his support behind legislation in the House that would increase funding for law enforcement.
More Comments on Gallego
“The APA does not take our endorsements lightly; we recognize the importance of having a U.S. Senator that can bring people together to improve society for all. We believe Congressman Gallego will be that U.S. Senator," Harris went on.
The group's endorsement was warmly received by Gallego, who expressed his support for "both practical reforms and increased resources" for the police.
“I am proud to have the APA’s support and look forward to working with them in the Senate to ensure Arizona’s law enforcement officers have the resources necessary to combat fentanyl trafficking, train the next generation of officers, and, above all, keep Arizona families safe,” the Democrat said.
From Lake's Campaign
Lake's campaign informed the Post that she is a fervent supporter of law enforcement, whereas Gallego "vilified law enforcement" during his tenure in Congress.
“He supports open borders and is weak on crime. Kari Lake will always back the blue and support law enforcement and safe communities,” a Lake spokesman told The Post after the announcement.
However, when it comes to endorsements from Arizona's law enforcement organizations Lake isn't to be counted out. The candidate has the support of the Arizona Law Enforcement Association, the Arizona Conference of Police and Sheriffs, and the Phoenix Police Sergeants and Lieutenants Association.
Gallego is also supported by the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees, which encompasses certain law enforcement and other first responders.
