Republican congressman suggests he may try to unseat Sen. McConnell

A Republican Congressman is thinking about trying to unseat U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY).

The congressman, according to Fox News, is U.S. Rep. Andy Barr.

Barr, as we will see, believes that it is time for McConnell to go - especially considering the fact that he seems to be working against President Donald Trump and Republicans these days.

Whether Barr could actually unseat McConnell, though, is another question.

"Time for..."

It would appear that Barr is trying to see whether or not he would have enough support to launch a Senate bid that could challenge McConnell. McConnell will be up for reelection in 2026.

Barr to Fox:

I’m listening to supporters, advisors, friends, people I trust, but most importantly, I’m listening to my family and talking to my family, and I am grateful for the strong encouragement to run. A lot of constituents are encouraging me to run for the Senate, and I am grateful for the outpouring of financial support that’s coming my way.

Barr went on to take aim at McConnell.

He said, "It's time for Kentucky to have a U.S. senator who supports President Trump."

This may not be fair to the other Senator in Kentucky, but it is certainly fair to McConnell.

Background

In case you missed it, McConnell has been voting against Trump again in the Senate. This time, he has opposed two of Trump's nominations, namely, Tulsi Gabbard and Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

McConnell was the only Republican to vote against these individuals, but his efforts failed - both got through. Kennedy is now the head of Health and Human Services and Gabbard is the new Director of National Intelligence.

Trump recently hammered McConnell for voting against his picks. He, according to Breitbart News, said:

I feel sorry for Mitch. He's not equipped to be leader, mentally. He never was. Under him, the Republican Party was going to H*ll. McConnell never really had it. He had votes because he gave money to senators. I was the one that got McConnell to drop out of the leadership position. He's not voting against Bobby [Kennedy], he's voting against me. He's a very bitter guy. But we have a very strong party, and he's lost his power. It's affected his vote.

There is little doubt that pro-Trump Republicans will be working hard to replace McConnell in 2026.

Less clear, however, is whether McConnell will put up a fight or bow out. He has yet to make this decision.
