Multiple states have enacted "constitutional carry" legislation which repealed the requirement that residents obtain a permit before carrying a concealed firearm.

This week saw Republicans members of the North Carolina Senate pass SB 50 bill which would add their state to the list.

Legislation allows most citizens to carry a concealed handgun

Officially known as the "Freedom to Carry" bill, it states, "Any person who is a citizen of the United States and is at least 18 years old may carry a concealed handgun in this State unless provided otherwise by law."

The text excludes those who are "ineligible to own, possess, or receive a firearm under the provisions of State or federal law" as well as people who have been convicted of certain misdemeanor offenses from carrying weapons.

It further provides that armed individuals must "also carry valid identification" and "disclose to any law enforcement officer" that they are carrying a concealed handgun upon being approached or addressed.

Breitbart noted that SB 50's primary sponsors are Republican state Sens. Danny Britt, Warren Daniel, and Eddie Settle.

Anti-gun activist says bill "will be paid for in North Carolinian lives"

After passing along partisan lines on Thursday by a vote of 26 to 18, the legislation will go on to the state House for consideration there.

Breitbart pointed out that SB 50 has been slammed by anti-gun activists, including Becky Ceartas, who serves as executive director of North Carolinians Against Gun Violence.

"If Senate Bill 50 becomes law, it would mean that people as young as 18 years old, with no training and no background check, could carry a hidden loaded weapon in public," she was quoted as saying.

"Make no mistake, if Senate Bill 50 passes, the research is clear: it will be paid for in North Carolinian lives," she went on to insist.

Republican lawmaker may struggle to override governor's veto

Sen. Britt countered by saying, "We believe that our constitution is clear that law abiding citizens should be allowed to constitutionally carry."

"We believe they should be able to constitutionally carry without having to jump through the hoops that you do for a concealed carry permit," he stressed.

However, SB 50 seems on track to be shot down unless Republican lawmakers can override a likely veto by North Carolina Democratic Gov. Josh Stein.

WRAL News explained that for this to happen, SB 50 would need unanimous support from every GOP House member along with the defection of at least one Democrat.
