Secret Service to use bulletproof ballistic glass to protect Trump at future outdoor campaign rallies
Despite nearly being killed by a would-be assassin at an outdoor campaign rally in Pennsylvania last month, former President Donald Trump has reportedly been insistent that he wants to resume holding large outdoor gatherings with his supporters.
The U.S. Secret Service has now approved a new plan to help make those outdoor campaign events safer for Trump, and part of that plan includes surrounding the Republican nominee with bulletproof ballistic glass, The Washington Post reported.
That part of the protective agency's new plan for the former president, much of the rest of which remains a secret, is unusual in that the use of ballistic glass is generally reserved for only the sitting president and vice president and is typically not part of the security measures granted to former officials or unelected candidates.
Bulletproof ballistic glass
ABC News was the first to report that it had learned from unnamed sources that the Secret Service had made arrangements to provide former President Trump with special bulletproof ballistic glass panels to help protect him in future outdoor campaign events.
Following the failed July 13 assassination attempt, in which a shooter on a nearby rooftop fired several shots at Trump, one of which slightly injured his right ear, the Secret Service and others urged the Trump campaign to stop holding outdoor events, and since then, all of Trump's campaign events have been held indoors.
Yet, Trump has reportedly expressed his desire to resume the outdoor rallies, both privately and in public, and sought assurances that he will be kept safe from would-be assailants. Hence, the decision to employ the special ballistic glass panels that will surround him on three sides.
"The Secret Service use of UpArmored glass around former President Trump is another step to ensure the campaign is and remains secure," Don Mihalek, a retired senior Secret Service agent who's now an ABC News contributor, told the outlet. "This isn't just a piece of glass but a large, bulky, and heavy armored glass that will require extensive logistics capability, normally reserved for large-scale outdoor events."
Indeed, per The Post, the ballistic glass panels are so big and heavy that they are often transported via military equipment, and it was noted that stockpiles of the special bulletproof panels have been staged at various spots across the country to make them more readily accessible and available for wherever Trump's outdoor campaign events may be held.
More personnel and unspecified new tech
According to NBC News, the ballistic glass panels likely won't be utilized at every outdoor campaign event for former President Trump, but rather will be reserved for certain rally sites or particular situations in which the added security of the bulletproof shields are deemed necessary by the Secret Service.
Nor is the ballistic glass the only new security measure put in place to better protect Trump, as the outlet noted that the Secret Service has bolstered its protection of Trump with additional staffing and new technologies, including the deployment of more counter-snipers and countersurveillance teams, along with more and better-detailed analysis of potential threats and preventative measures.
The Post reported that the Secret Service declined to specify what new technologies they planned to employ to protect Trump at outdoor events, but it seems likely that increased use of unmanned surveillance drones is part of the plan.
Some of idle Biden's protective team reassigned to bolster Trump's detail
Meanwhile, The New York Times reported that unnamed sources say some members of President Joe Biden's Secret Service protective team have been temporarily reassigned and shifted over to boost former President Trump's security detail.
The presidential protective division includes hundreds of the agency's best and brightest agents and employees -- many of whom are doing very little these days given how infrequently Biden is traveling now after he dropped out of the 2024 race last month.
The agents who otherwise would be traveling and doing advance work for Biden, were he still campaigning for re-election, have instead been made available to Trump's team when and where they are deemed necessary.
