Secret Service ends its protection of Jimmy Carter

For the first time in nearly five decades, the U.S. Secret Service will no longer be protecting former President Jimmy Carter.

This, of course, is because Carter has passed away and has been laid to rest.

The Hill reports that the Secret Service officially ended its protection of Carter this past week.

"Longest protection detail...in history"

According to Kelly O'Donnell, of NBC News, Carter had the longest Secret Service protection of anyone in U.S. history. This probably has something to do with two facts: he was president in the 1970s, and, after his presidency, he would go on to live until 2024.

"The Carter detail set a record for the agency servicing 49 years and two months," O'Donnell reports.

She goes on to explain:

Carter became a protectee as a presidential candidate on Oct. 8, 1975. Mrs. Carter was assigned with her own detail during the fall stretch of the 1976 campaign and weeks after the convention on Sept. 6, 1976. In the Carters' later years, the details became one unit protecting them jointly.

This protection lasted until Thursday evening, when Carter's body, after the funeral services, was taken back to his home in Georgia for internment.

O'Donnell reports:

Agents had remained with the late president during the days of the state funeral ceremonies and accompanied his casket to its final resting place late Thursday evening on the grounds of the Carte rhome in Plains, Georgia.

"Carter holds the distinction of being..."

The Secret Service has released its own statement on the situation.

Two Secret Service officials told O'Donnell that Carter's "physical protection duty discontinued Friday morning."

Secret Service Director Anthony Guglielmi, said:

President Jimmy Carter holds the distinction of being the longest-serving Secret Service protectee in history. President Carter had a lasting impression on everyone at the Secret Service but especially his detail were inspired by his public service, compassion, and incredible dedication to humanity.

The Secret Service has revealed that Carter's code name was "Deacon.

USA Today reports:

As with all presidents, Carter’s code name was given to him based on his personality. A deeply devout Baptist, Carter was a churchgoer all his life. He was said to have continued to teach Sunday school even after becoming president in 1977. He served one term, ending in 1981 and, per policy, the Secret Service continued to protect him and his wife until death.
