Former President Donald Trump received some good news this week when one of this allies won a special election.

According to The Hill, Republican candidate Celeste Maloy defeated Democratic state Sen. Kathleen Riebe in Utah's 2nd Congressional District on Tuesday.

Maloy says she "ready to get to work on 'The People's' business"

The race was called after Republican Rep. Chris Stewart chose to step down from his seat due to concerns over his wife's health. The Hill noted that Maloy previously served as chief legal counsel in Stewart’s congressional office.

The new Republican congresswoman celebrated her win in a post on the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, writing, "It’s an honor to be CD 2’s next representative in Congress - THANK YOU!"

"I am committed to being a good representative for everyone in CD 2 from Davis County to Washington County - and everywhere in-between," she pledged, adding, "I’m ready to get to work on 'The People's' business in Congress."

Maloy: Trump's impeachment was "political grandstanding"

During an interview with The Salt Lake Tribune, Maloy slammed former President Trump's second impeachment as "political grandstanding."

"I think we’ve made impeachment too easy of a process," she told the newspaper, stressing, "It’s supposed to be an absolute last resort."

"At the time impeachment was started, there was no doubt that President Trump was not going to be removed from office," Maloy insisted.

"I think we should be more thoughtful and make sure an impeachment never looks like political grandstanding," the Republican declared.

Sting of polls show Trump ahead of Biden

For his part, Maloy's former boss announced in a post on the social media platform then known as Twitter that he would not be voting to certify the 2020 election.

In a subsequent post, Stewart cited "issues surrounding voting irregularities, ballot integrity and security, and the implementation of state election laws."

Malory's victory comes as Trump has seen a string of polls showing him ahead of President Joe Biden in the national popular vote.
