The FBI shared new details with Congress about the digital footprint of the man who tried to kill Donald Trump.

A week before the assassination attempt, Thomas Matthew Crooks Googled "How far away was Oswald from Kennedy?"

The July 6 Google search was recovered from Crooks' laptop, FBI director Christopher Wray told the House Judiciary panel Wednesday.

FBI searches shooter's laptop

The information makes clear that Crooks was plotting to kill Trump at least a week before the July 13 rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. What the FBI hasn't said yet is why he did it.

Crooks had a general interest in public figures, Wray noted. It was previously reported that pictures of Trump and Joe Biden were saved on Crooks' phone.

But those images were saved automatically from searching news articles, Wray said. The pictures are not indicative of a "target list," he said.

"We're hoping to learn more, and we're still exploiting a number of digital devices," Wray said.

Encryption an obstacle

Crooks appears to be a "loner" with a short list of phone contacts, Wray said. However the FBI is facing challenges unlocking the encrypted messaging apps that Crooks used.

The FBI also found a drone in Crooks' car. Agents reverse-engineered its flight path, and determined it was in the air about 200 yards away from the stage where Trump spoke.

The drone was livestreaming footage to Crooks' phone about two hours before the shooting. The drone would have given a "rear view" of what was behind Crooks when he was on the roof.

Trump urges Wray to resign

Wray also shared more information about the shooter's ladder and the FBI's theory of how he got up on the rooftop.

A bloody receipt on Crooks' body was tied to a five-foot ladder, but it wasn't found at the scene. The FBI believes Crooks shimmied onto the roof using pipes.

Of course, many Americans remain skeptical of the FBI and its involvement in this important investigation, given the agency's record of bias toward President Trump and his supporters.

President Trump called on Wray to resign "immediately" after he testified that his interactions with President Biden "have all been completely fine."

Biden just ended his re-election campaign, weeks after he gave a debate performance that many saw as proof of cognitive decline.
