Trump smashing DeSantis in Florida: Report

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), once thought to be a formidable competitor to former President Donald Trump in the 2024 GOP primary race, is now struggling to maintain support in his own state.

A number of media outlets, including The Wall Street Journal, have recognized that Trump is Trumping DeSantis in his own state, which was recently evidenced at the Florida Republican Party's "Freedom Summit" last week.

From the polls to party insiders -- to endorsements by other Florida politicians -- Trump remains the clear frontrunner in DeSantis' Florida.

Trump also dominates DeSantis nationwide, and in virtually every relevant 2024 GOP primary poll, many by double digits now.

Freedom Summit

Trump provided the keynote address at this year's Freedom Summit -- an event hosted by the state's Republican Party, which is a party DeSantis helped build.

Even so, DeSantis was scheduled for a midday speaking slot in comparison, and received little to no fanfare as a result.

Trump, on the other hand, dominated the evening. Other GOP candidates who spoke, like former Governor's Chris Christie and Asa Hutchinson, were literally booed out of the room.

According to WSJ, Trump's team rolled out a slate of endorsements from Florida legislators -- many of whom might have endorsed DeSantis early on -- just before the event, building even more hype for the former president.

The WSJ noted:

Hours later, Trump came out to an even more rapturous reception, a video screen before him declaring, “Florida is Trump country,” and he called onto stage his new legislative supporters. “We’re going to win the state in a landslide next November,” he predicted.

Missteps

The WSJ noted DeSantis' many "missteps" after being the "hottest" thing in Republican politics as the 2024 campaign season kicked off.

The outlet noted:

But DeSantis has faded because of campaign missteps, including a decision to attack Trump from his right flank, which alienated moderate Republicans without peeling off Trump supporters. Meanwhile, Republicans everywhere have coalesced around Trump in response to his multiple criminal indictments. The Trump operation has bludgeoned DeSantis with more than $21 million in attack ads across the country.

In recent months, many Republican mega-donors who either backed DeSantis or signaled early support for him have already jumped ship.

There was also a time when DeSantis was floated as a possible vice president for Trump's ticket, though that ship has likely long sailed.
