'You think he's going to show up?' Pelosi questions whether Trump will skip debate against Harris
House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) came out of left field during a conversation with journalist Kara Swisher at the Texas Tribune festival over the weekend, questioning whether former President Donald Trump would show up to the scheduled debate between himself and Democrat presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris on Tuesday night.
Pelosi was asked what advice she would give Trump in advance of the debate. "You think he’s gonna show up?" Pelosi asked facetiously.
Her quip made the liberal audience laugh, and Swisher asked, "Do you know something I don’t know?"
"I know cowardice when I see it," Pelosi responded.
"Misogynist pig?"
Pelosi then praised Liz Cheney, formerly the House Republican Whip until she went against Trump, who had called Trump a "misogynist pig" on the same stage earlier in the event.
"Isn’t she wonderful?" Pelosi said about Cheney.
The Trump campaign blasted Pelosi for the comment and said she was trying to create fake news.
"Nancy Pelosi has no idea what she is talking about and has been proven to be a liar and fraud. If she isn't busy giving herself fake titles to make herself feel better, she's peddling fake news because it's the only thing she's ever done," Trump spokesperson Steven Cheung told Fox News Digital.
There has been bad blood between Pelosi and Trump since he first became President in 2016. Pelosi famously ripped up her copy of his State of the Union address in 2020 to show her anger with him.
Pelosi has also repeatedly said Trump is a "threat to democracy" without a shred of evidence to back up her claims.
Desperate for attention
It's likely that Pelosi was just trying desperately to get attention for her book, The Art of Power, which she was plugging at the event.
The book is currently number five on the New York Times bestseller list after four weeks, but is dropping fast.
She's also likely miffed that her party's candidate Harris isn't doing better against Trump in polls, which have begun to drop for Harris almost as fast as Pelosi's book sales.
Democrats are in big trouble over the economy and immigration, and these kinds of comments from Pelosi are not going to help matters any.
