Texas mother charged with attempted capital murder after knife attack on husband and two young kids
A Northlake mother faces attempted capital murder charges after police say she stabbed her husband and two young children in their home before dawn, leaving the family hospitalized.
Holly Leeann Flores, 37, was detained following the early Tuesday morning attack at the family's residence in Northlake, a small town about half an hour north of Fort Worth.
Her husband called 911 around 4:20 a.m. to report that he had been stabbed in the head by his wife. Calls indicated he was trying to reach the children in another room while Flores allegedly continued trying to stab him.
Northlake officers arrived and conducted a protective sweep of the home. They found a 3-year-old girl and a 10-month-old boy with stab wounds to their chests and rushed both children to the hospital.
The husband and both kids remained hospitalized and were expected to survive. Flores sustained a small cut on her chest area, received stitches, was treated and released, then taken into custody and transported to Denton County Jail.
Northlake Police Chief Robert Crawford addressed the case at a press conference.
Crawford stated, in remarks carried by the New York Post:
"An adult female, identified as Holly Leanne Flores, 37 years of age, has been treated and released from the hospital, taken into custody, and transported to Denton County Jail."
He outlined the preliminary charges detectives prepared.
"Our detectives are still investigating the incident, and have preliminary charges as follows: two charges of attempted capital murder, and one charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon."
Prior welfare calls reached the same address five times
Cops had been called to the family's address around five times since March. Most of those calls involved welfare concerns.
Crawford declined to release further details while the probe continued.
"I don’t want to say anything out of context right now, so some of that information will probably come out later."
He also described the scene officers faced.
"It’s very heartbreaking when we have to respond to a traumatic event such as this."
Violent attacks that leave victims needing emergency care have become a grim pattern in other recent cases, including a pregnant Topeka woman mauled by neighbor's dogs who required extensive hospital surgery.
Here, the two children were still infants and toddlers. The 10-month-old boy and 3-year-old girl both suffered chest wounds severe enough to demand immediate hospital treatment.
Emergency responders confronted a similar race-against-time medical crisis after passengers subdued a Flydubai pilot in a cockpit stabbing that sent an Israel-bound jet into an emergency plunge.
Detectives keep working the case while the family recovers
Flores remains in Denton County Jail on the preliminary counts of two charges of attempted capital murder and one charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
No motive has been publicly stated. The husband's name and the children's names have not been released. Specific hospital names were also withheld.
Mass-casualty violence elsewhere has likewise forced rapid medical responses, as when three were killed and four wounded at Seattle's Bite of Seattle food festival.
Young victims of sudden violence often face long recoveries. That reality hit hard after an LA high school student died following a classmate beating that left him critically injured.
In Northlake, police continue to investigate every aspect of the pre-dawn stabbing while the husband and two children remain under hospital care.
A family's home is supposed to be the one place children can sleep without fear. This one failed them.
