Members of the Trump family were blindsided just over a week ago when former President Donald Trump faced his second assassination attempt in two months.

This week, the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced that it had brought charges against the alleged perpetrator.

Gunman spotted by Secret Service agent during golf game

According to a press release put out on Thursday, a federal grand jury in Miami indicted 58-year-old Hawaii resident Ryan Wesley Routh.

Routh is accused of having waited with a rifle "in the brush along the fence line near the sixth hole" of Trump's Florida golf course on September 15.

A Secret Service agent who was assigned to help guard the president as he played noticed Routh pointing his weapon and responded by opening fire.

The press release explained that Routh subsequently retreated from his position and fled the scene in a black Nissan Xterra. He was later apprehended by officers from the Martin County and Palm Beach County Sheriff's Offices.

FBI director: Routh's crime "strikes at the very heart of our democratic system"

"Violence targeting public officials endangers everything our country stands for, and the Department of Justice will use every available tool to hold Ryan Routh accountable for the attempted assassination of former President Trump charged in the indictment," Attorney General Merrick Garland was quoted as saying.

"The Justice Department will not tolerate violence that strikes at the heart of our democracy, and we will find and hold accountable those who perpetrate it," he added.

FBI Director Christopher Wray spoke up as well, stating, "Routh is charged with attempted assassination of a presidential candidate, which strikes at the very heart of our democratic system."

In addition to the assassination charge, Routh is also accused of possessing a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence, assaulting a federal officer, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and possessing a firearm with an obliterated serial number.

Earlier assassination attempt left one Trump supporter dead

Routh's alleged attempt to take Trump's life came roughly eight weeks after the former president was grazed by a bullet while speaking at a rally in Pennsylvania.

Some of the rally-goers were hit as well, including 50-year-old former fire chief Cory Comperatore, who was fatally wounded by a bullet.

Former First Lady Melania Trump addressed the tragedy in a statement, saying, "To the families of the innocent victims who are now suffering from this heinous act, I humbly offer my sincerest sympathy."
