Legendary Dolphins player Mercury Morris dies at 77

The National Football League lost one of it's most beloved players this week, and the internet has been alive with talk of the tragic loss.

The Miami Dolphins announced Sunday morning that Mercury Morris, a legendary player for the franchise, passed away at the age of 77, as The Daily Caller reported.

Morris, a dynamic running back and returner who the Dolphins drafted in the third round out of West Texas State, was an integral part in the team's run to the Super Bowl.

In response to the news of the passing of a legendary Dolphin, the team issued a statement.

In their statement about Morris' passing, the Dolphins talked about his love of the team, and the crucial part he played in the history of team victories.

The family of the late football player put out a statement, announcing his passing:

"It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Eugene 'Mercury' Morris, legendary Miami Dolphins running back and cherished member of the NFL family, at the age of 77," the statement said.

"Known for his electrifying speed and dynamic play, Mercury was a cornerstone of the Dolphins' historic 1972 undefeated season and a two-time Super Bowl champion."

The statement went on to point out some of Morris's most beloved attributes: "His talent and passion left an indelible mark on the sport, and his three Pro Bowl selections only solidified his place among football's greats."

Personal Life

In the family's statement, they talked fondly about his personal life saying, "Beyond the field, Mercury was a devoted father, a loving brother, a loyal friend, and a pillar in the community.

"His presence extended far beyond football, as he touched the lives of many throughout his time in Miami."

The late football player is survived by children Geno, Maceo, Tiffany, Troy, and Elliott, and his siblings Cynthia, Valerie, and Janice.

The statement went on to add in the touching tribute that, in addition to his living relatives, "Mercury's legacy is carried on by those who knew and loved him."
