Who could Kamala Harris' pick for VP?
It would appear as though Kamala Harris is going to be the nominee for Democrats in 2024, but the president is only half of any ticket.
Now that Kamala seemingly has the presidential nomination secured, it's time to start speculating about who her running mate could be. If you were thinking it might be California Governor Gavin Newsom (D), the Washington Examiner doesn't want you to get your hopes up.
Gavin Newsom's name is currently being floated alongside other Democratic Governors Roy Cooper, Andy Beshear, and Josh Shapiro.
Gavin Newsom
Gavin Newsom is a name that a lot of Americans know.
He's young, he's energetic, he's got some wild ideas, he looks exactly like a politician, and he used to be married to Donald Trump's daughter-in-law.
The big problem with the idea of Gavin Newsom being on the same ticket as Kamala Harris is America's Constitution. The 12th Amendment prohibits two people from the same state on the same presidential ticket from being voted upon by that state's delegates. America's Constitution states that electors must "vote by ballot for President and Vice-President, one of whom, at least, shall not be an inhabitant of the same state with themselves."
Unfortunately for Newsom, it looks like this would be too big of a hurdle to clear in such short time. Donald Trump ran into the same problem when he was considering Marco Rubio from Florida before ultimately choosing Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio.
They could get tricky like Dick Cheney did back in 2000 when despite living in Texas, Cheney changed his residency to Wyoming where he had once represented the state in the House so that both candidates wouldn't be from the Lone Star State.
Roy Cooper
North Carolina's governor Roy Cooper (D) has already endorsed Kamala Harris for president, and he appears to be an early favorite online for being the potential VP pick.
Before Joe Biden had dropped out of the race, Cooper had refused to talk about whether he would ever consider joining the ticket. However, Democrats around America might want to see him run.
"If the president decides not to run, I see Kamala Harris and I would hope Roy Cooper," said former Democratic National Committee chair Howard Dean. "I think we would pick up North Carolina as a result."
Andy Beshear
The Governor of Kentucky since 2019, Beshear is a person who's also in the conversation to be the Democratic VP candidate.
Beshear is no stranger to high-profile positions. He was the attorney general of Kentucky from 2016 to 2019 and even sued the state's governor multiple times during that stretch.
Josh Shapiro
Josh Shapiro is the last man that the Washington Examiner mentioned as being a legitimate option for Kamala Harris. Perhaps you've been introduced to Josh Shapiro just recently, as he's the Governor of Pennsylvania who had to come out and describe to the nation how Donald Trump had just been shot in the face in his state.
Despite currently living in Pennsylvania, Shapiro was born in Missouri and attended college in Rochester, NY, so there's a chance he could help gain votes in multiple states.
Whatever the Democratic ticket ends up being in 2024, there's no question that they're facing an uphill battle against Donald Trump.
