Republican senators gear up for fight to replace Mitch McConnell

Not only did Republicans win back the White House with President-elect Donald Trump's massive victory over Vice President Kamala Harris and the Democrats, but other prizes were won for the GOP on Election Day.

One of the biggest ones besides the White House is the fact that Republicans won majority control of the U.S. Senate.

According to the New York Post, with Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) vowing earlier this year to step down from a leadership role after the election, the fight to replace him has already begun.

As it stands, there are at least three high-profile Republican senators vying to replace McConnell in his leadership role for one of the most powerful positions in Congress.

What's going on?

Republicans wasted zero time setting a date for a leadership vote, marking it for Nov. 13.

The three Republicans most likely to win the coveted Senate Majority Leader title include Minority Whip John Thune of South Dakota, John Cornyn of Texas and Rick Scott of Florida.

The New York Post noted:

Scott, who unsuccessfully challenged McConnell after the 2022 midterms, is seen as the underdog in the race, while Thune and Cornyn have worked closely with McConnell and adhere to the Kentuckian’s brand of traditional Republican politics.

So far, McConnell has not said much about the upcoming leadership vote, and not many Senate Republicans have announced which horse they're backing, though that could change in the coming days.

Of course, all eyes will be on who President-elect Trump endorses for the top Senate spot, though it's unclear if he will.

Thune acknowledged Trump's influence on the leadership vote, saying recently, "The president obviously has tremendous influence, if he chooses to use it."

Statements released

"It is critically important that the Senate is prepared to enact his pro-growth agenda from day one. Come January, we must be ready to confirm his nominees, pass a budget, address our debt, extend the Trump tax cuts, and reverse Kamala Harris’ disastrous border security policies,” Sen. Cornyn said.

While not formally mentioned as a contender, there's growing support across social media for Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) to take the top Senate leadership spot.

Only time will tell who the GOP selects, but any of the above mentioned candidates should be a profound upgrade from what they currently have in McConnell.
