Fetterman says his fellow Dems were wrong about illegal immigration
U.S. Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) is arguing that one of the reasons why his fellow Democrats did so poorly in the 2024 elections is because they were wrong about illegal immigration.
Fetterman, according to Fox News, pointed out the mistake during an appearance, over the weekend, on the Fox News Channel's Fox News Sunday.
If you are less familiar with Fetterman, he is a Democrat, but he has turned out to be less extreme than he initially appeared when he ran against Dr. Mehmet Oz for one of Pennsylvania's U.S. Senate seats.
Fetterman, especially recently, has shown a willingness to both admit when his fellow Democrats are wrong about an issue and admit what the Republicans have gotten right.
The latest
During his Fox appearance on Sunday, Fetterman admitted that the southern border crisis is a big problem for Democrats.
He said:
Well, one area where we kind of lost ourselves was the border. And I've been on this network, you know, months, months ago saying, 'Hey, you know, it can't be controversial for our party to have pro-immigration, but we need a secure border.' And when we ask or demand people to not believe what they see, and see those kind of numbers, that that's not a problem. It's like, well, then you lose about that 100%.
Fetterman continued by expanding on this point.
He said:
I've tried to describe – you have up to 300,000 people – encounters – per month. And I put that in perspective with Pennsylvania. I'm like, that's the size of Pittsburgh showing up in one month. It's like, what's going to happen for those folks? If we want them [to have] the American Dream for those people, how can we possibly deliver that? Where do they go? And we can't pretend that that's not a significant issue. And we got to address that.
The senator certainly has a point here - one that Republicans would agree with.
There's more
During his Fox appearance, Fetterman also spoke out against those Democrats who, leading up to the 2024 election, assumed an anti-Israel position. This, to some extent, would include Vice President Kamala Harris.
He said:
I said I was going to follow Israel. And since they refused to have that cease-fire, they have eliminated and broken Hamas, and Hezbollah, Hezbollah was supposed to be like the ultimate bada** in the Middle East, and now they were a bunch of Keystone Cops, and Iran has just been exposed, as you know, they really can't fight about anything. So that's been a significant development here.
Fetterman said that he hopes the incoming Trump administration will be "very, very strong pro-Israel."
One thing that seems clear is that President-Elect Donald Trump is not going to be anti-Israel, but it is unclear whether he will be as pro-Israel as the likes of Fetterman will want.
Time will tell.
