Ex-sister-in-law of Pete Hegseth raises new allegations of abusive behavior against Trump's Defense nominee

It is unmistakeably clear that Democrats and the media want no part of Pete Hegseth being confirmed as President Donald Trump's secretary of Defense, and they are rolling out the usual playbook to try to ruin him.

On Tuesday, senators received an affidavit from Hegseth's former sister-in-law that made several damning allegations of abuse against him, according to Politico.

That affidavit conveniently emerged just one day after the nominee garnered the approval of the Senate Armed Services Committee to stand for a full confirmation vote on the Senate floor in the coming days.

New allegations against Hegseth

NBC News was the first to report on the affidavit provided to senators by Danielle Dietrich, who was previously married to Hegseth's brother for several years, that accused the Trump nominee of abusing his second wife, Samantha, among other critical allegations about his behavior.

Danielle alleged that Samantha was so fearful of Hegseth's abusive behavior that she once hid from him in a closet and had developed code word-triggered escape plans with friends and family members in case she ever needed to get away from him quickly.

The ex-sister-in-law further alleged that Hegseth routinely abused alcohol and was verbally abusive toward her and others. She also asserted that he at times used blatantly misogynistic and racist language around others.

Notably, however, Samantha appeared to deny the allegations raised by Danielle, as she told NBC when reached for comment, "I do not believe your information to be accurate, and I have cc’d my lawyer."

Pressed for specifics on what the outlet got wrong in its report, Hegseth's ex-wife replied, "There was no physical abuse in my marriage. This is the only further statement I will make to you, I have let you know that I am not speaking and will not speak on my marriage to Pete. Please respect this decision."

Democrats believe, attorney debunks

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee, Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI), indicated to NBC News that he believed Danielle's claims, and told the outlet, "Hegseth’s history of alleged sexual assault, alcohol abuse, and public misconduct necessitate an exhaustive background investigation. I have been concerned that the background check process has been inadequate, and this sworn affidavit confirms that fact."

"The alleged pattern of abuse and misconduct by Mr. Hegseth is disturbing," the Democratic senator added. "This behavior would disqualify any service member from holding any leadership position in the military, much less being confirmed as the Secretary of Defense."

Conversely, an attorney for Hegseth, Tim Parlatore, told the outlet, "Sam has never alleged that there was any abuse, she signed court documents acknowledging that there was no abuse and recently reaffirmed the same during her FBI interview. Belated claims by Danielle Dietrich, an anti-Trump far-left Democrat who is divorced from Mr. Hegseth’s brother and never got along with the Hegseth family, do nothing to change that."

"After an acrimonious divorce, Ms. Dietrich has had an axe to grind against the entire Hegseth family," the attorney added. "Ms. Dietrich admits that she saw nothing but is now falsely accusing Sam of lying to both the Court and to the FBI because of private, undocumented statements that she allegedly made 10 years ago."

Approved by committee, ready for confirmation vote

These new allegations against Hegseth emerged just one day after The Washington Post reported that the nominee was approved by the Senate Armed Services Committee in a party-line vote of 14-13 on Monday.

There was a possibility that Hegseth could have a full confirmation vote in the Senate this week, though Democrats were attempting to exploit procedural rules to delay it, and it remains to be seen if these new claims will suffice to push that vote back, not to mention if it will sway more than a few fence-riding Republicans to vote against him whenever that vote is eventually held.
