Alvin Bragg opposes Trump's request that judge in New York case recuse himself

The Washington Examiner reported earlier this month that defense attorneys in former President Donald Trump's New York hush-money case filed a motion asking the judge to recuse himself.

Yet the paper noted this week that Democratic Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg is furiously pushing back.

Judge's daughter helped Adam Schiff raise funds using Trump's New York case

At issue is the fact that New York Judge Juan Merchan's daughter is the chief operating officer and president of Authentic Campaigns, a Democrat-aligned political consulting firm.

The company's clients have included President Joe Biden, Michigan Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Arizona Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs, Oregon Democratic Gov. Tina Kotek, and California Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff.

The New York Post reported that Authentic Campaigns has even featured Trump's New York case in an advertising campaign that raised tens of millions of dollars for Schiff last year.

"Authentic Campaigns, and thus the judge’s daughter, is actively making money from this sham attack against President Trump, rendering Judge Merchan conflicted out," Trump spokesman Steven Cheung was quoted as telling the Post.

Bragg says Trump is making a "last-ditch attempt" to "indefinitely" delay his case

Trump's legal team made a similar argument in their motion, writing, "The manner in which Authentic and Ms. Merchan are marketing the company, and making money, through expressions of animus toward President Trump has created a prohibited appearance of impropriety."

However, prosecutors shot back with a filing of their own on Monday which slammed the former president's allegations.

They called Trump's motion "yet another last-ditch attempt to address defendant’s real objective, which is — as the Court has already recognized — to delay this proceeding indefinitely."

The prosecution further maintained that it is "replete with references to facts that are not new at all" and used "warmed-over versions of facts."

Trump went after Merchan on social media despite gag order

Trump's lawyers aren't the only ones taking aim at the judge, as the former president has personally gone after Merchan despite his having imposed a gag order.

One example came late last month when Trump declared in a social media post that the judge is "suffering from an acute case of Trump Derangement Syndrome."

Trump went on to complain that Merchan's daughter "has just posted a picture of me behind bars," something he called "her obvious goal."
