Former President Donald Trump, in his quest to win the Oval Office back next week, has racked up an impressive and seemingly never-ending list of high-powered endorsements.

According to the Daily Mail, the former president added one more well-known supporter to his list -- legendary astronaut Buzz Aldrin.

Aldrin, in a statement, revealed one of the primary reasons why he's backing Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris, namely Trump's interest in reviving the space program.

During his first term in office, Trump was a strong proponent of traveling back to space and beyond, and even signed off on an order with the goal of sending U.S. astronauts to Mars.

What did he say?

Aldrin made clear why Trump landed his endorsement, which comes in the final week before voters head to the ballot box on Election Day.

The Daily Mail noted:

'Over the years, I have seen our government's approach to space wax and wane, a fluctuating dynamic that has disappointed me from time to time,' Aldrin penned.

'But under the first Trump Administration, I was impressed to see how human space exploration was elevated, made a policy of high importance again.'

Aldrin was the second man to walk on the moon after his colleague Neil Armstrong, quickly becoming an iconic astronaut as a result, with one of the most memorable names in the business.

"I have dedicated my life to the pursuit of scientific understanding, exploration, and an enduring human presence in space,' he said in the address.

He added, "The importance of that mission, that calling, runs through every fiber of my being."

Aldrin added that Trump's interest in returning to deeper space during his first term was "impressive" and hopes Trump will continue that momentum should he be elected once more.

Social media reacts

Users across social media, and especially Trump's supporters, seemed pleased with Aldring announcing his backing of the former president.

"As a West Pointer, and an Army officer, you were trained, steeped in, and manifested leadership. Trust you know it when you see it. Godspeed Mr Aldrin," one X user wrote.

"Thank you for your service to our country, Mr. Aldrin, and your wise vision for our nation's future," another X user wrote.
