Former President Donald Trump's legal defense team made headlines last month when it submitted a court filing featuring cell phone data linked to special prosecutor Nathan Wade.

This week saw a lawyer for one of Trump's co-defendants testify that the information proves Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis lied about her relationship with Wade.

Cell phone geolocation data suggests Wade regularly visited Willis' home

Republican political operative Michael Roman is one of 18 individuals who were indicted last year alongside Trump under Georgia's Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act on charges relating to the 2020 election.

His lawyers filed a motion to disqualify Willis on the grounds that she was engaged in an improper relationship with Wade at the time that she hired him to work on the case.

Ashleigh Merchant is among those representing Roman, and according to Fox News, she testified about the matter before Georgia's state Senate this week.

During her testimony, Merchant pointed to geolocation data from Wade's cellphone which indicates that he was a regular late-night visitor at Willis' home.

DA's office questions reliability of data despite using it to prosecute cases

"It's pinging from his house all the way down to the condo at midnight 1 a.m. And then he calls her when he gets there," Merchant was quoted as telling lawmakers.

"And then it goes silent for four or five hours. And then, you know, early in the morning hours, he starts pinging again, driving back, and then he texts her when he gets home," she continued.

Fox News noted how Willis' office has argued that geolocation data is an unreliable method for tracking Wade's movements.

However, Merchant pointed out how prosecutors are "currently using the same data in another courtroom to prosecute someone, but their defense in ours was that it's not reliable."

Fox News reported in January that the Georgia Senate voted 30 to 19 in favor of creating a special committee to investigate alleged impropriety in the Fulton County District Attorney's Office.

State senator points to "multitude of accusations surrounding Ms. Willis"

The special committee was proposed by Republican state Sen. Greg Dolezal, who highlighted "the multitude of accusations surrounding Ms. Willis."

He stressed that these include "allegations of prosecutorial misconduct to questions about the use of public funds and accusations of an unprofessional relationship."

"We owe it to the public to ensure transparency, accountability and the preservation of the integrity of our justice system," the state legislator insisted.
