Baltimore was left in mourning this past weekend after a shooting left two people dead and another 28 wounded.

According to the Associated Press, one of the deceased victims was a 20-year-old man while the other was an 18-year-old woman.

Two shooters yet to be identified

The violence erupted just after 12:30 a.m. on Sunday when two individuals opened fire at a block party in the city's Brooklyn Homes neighborhood.

Mayor Brandon M. Scott released a statement in which he promised that local authorities "will not rest until the people responsible are held accountable."

"But what we do know is that this was a recklessly cowardly act that happened here and that has permanently altered many lives and cost two people their lives," Scott insisted.

"And I want those responsible to hear me and hear me very clearly. We will not stop until we find you and we will find you," he pledged.

Scott has long advocated for greater restrictions on the right to bear arms, including after last year's school shooting in Uvalde, Texas.

"Prayers are not enough," Scott tweeted. "We must take action. We can honor the victims of Uvalde, Buffalo, Baltimore, and every corner of the country touched by gun violence by passing tougher gun laws. We cannot afford to do anything else."

Tough gun laws haven't stopped violence in Baltimore

However, Maryland's restrictive gun regulations have done little to stop the carnage in Scott's own city, which is widely considered to be one of America's most dangerous.

A CBS news report cited FBI data from 2019 showing that Baltimore had the second highest homicide rate in the country.

This is despite the fact that Maryland law bans so-called "assault weapons," limits magazine capacity, requires handguns to be registered, and forces citizens to obtain a permit before they can purchase one.

What's more, Maryland long made it all but impossible for most people to carry a firearm. That changed in July of last year following a Supreme Court ruling.
