Biden takes record dive in approval ratings, pollster suggests DNC swap him out with new candidate

No matter how the White House or his campaign attempts to spin it, President Joe Biden is in an extremely weak position heading into the November election.

On top of that, the news just keeps getting worse for the elderly president, who has made a number of gaffes in the past few weeks alone, presumably causing many more to highly doubt his ability to run the country for another few months, let alone an additional four years.

According to Fox News, pollster guru Nate Silver of "FiveThirtyEight" suggested this week that Biden's approval numbers -- which just hit a new low -- are so bad that the Democratic Party could be determining a way to have him bow out.

While a switch at this point in the game would come with great risk, it might be the only way for the Dem Party to salvage any chance of a win against former President Donald Trump, who continues to rock the polls post-conviction.

What's going on?

Silver explained the threshold of when the Dem Party should consider risking swapping Biden out with a stronger candidate.

"But Biden just hit a new all-time low in approval (37.4%) at 538 yesterday. Dropping out would be a big risk. But there's some threshold below which continuing to run is a bigger risk. Are we there yet? I don't know. But it's more than fair to ask," the pollster wrote.

Silver's assessment of the situation echoes that of others who've said that the Dem Party's only chances of beating Trump would be to insert a younger, stronger leader who could possibly regain some of the lost excitement among Democrat voters.

The pollster noted that Biden could have given the party a much better chance at besting Trump had the president opted to bow out of the race earlier on.

"What's clearer IMO is that Democrats would have been better served if Biden had decided a year ago not to seek a second term, which would have allowed them to have some semblance of a primary process and give voters a say among the many popular Democrats across the country," Silver wrote.

Social media reacts

Given the new data and how bad it looks for the Biden campaign, social media users had quite a bit to say.

"It’s elder abuse to have him running again," one X user wrote.

Another X user wrote, "Replacing old Joe is one thing, but how do you replace cackling Kamala?"

Only time will tell if the DNC makes the swap, but as the previous X user commented, they'll also need to find a politically digestible way to replace Vice President Kamala Harris, as her polling numbers are even worse.
