Lists grow longer of Democrats who plan to boycott Trump's inauguration ceremony

There is little question that many Democrats view President-elect Donald Trump with utter contempt and disdain, and have no qualms about publicly expressing their hatred for him and his supporters.

That has been made abundantly clear by the dozens of high-profile and elected Democrats who've openly stated or implied that they will not attend Trump's upcoming inauguration on Monday, according to Newsweek.

To be sure, several Democrats have given an assortment of non-Trump-related reasons for skipping the ceremony, but those excuses ring hollow and it is a safe bet that, were it Vice President Kamala Harris being sworn in instead of Trump, those same Democrats would find a way to free up their schedules and be at the inaugural event.

Some Democrats won't attend Trump's inauguration

Newsweek on Friday published a list of around 15 high-profile or elected Democrats who have confirmed to various media outlets that they won't be in attendance at President-elect Trump's inauguration on Monday.

That list is led most prominently by former first lady Michelle Obama and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and is filled out by more than a dozen Democratic members of the House.

Furthermore, there are dozens more Democratic representatives and senators who remain undecided at this point about whether or not to attend the event.

Excuses, excuses ...

Some of those who've already confirmed they aren't going have been honest about their loathing of Trump being the main reason, while a few others have expressed supposed fear about being surrounded by thousands of Trump's supporters in and around the Capitol building.

Still others have claimed that they won't be at the inauguration because they instead plan to participate in unrelated events in their home districts to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

There is little doubt, though, that those same Democrats would find a way to juggle their schedules and be in Washington D.C. if it were VP Harris instead of Trump getting inaugurated.

More Democrats and some world leaders

The Washington Post published a similar list of around 20 Democrats who've confirmed they will not attend President-elect Trump's inauguration and noted the real possibility that more names could be added over the weekend.

At this point, however, the total and possible numbers of those who aren't going remains far fewer than the roughly 100 Democrats who boycotted Trump's first inauguration in 2017.

Nor is it just spiteful and petty House Democrats who will be skipping Trump's inauguration, as USA Today reported that several prominent world leaders who are believed to have been invited to the event will not be showing up on Monday.

That includes Chinese President Xi Jinping, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, to name just a few, who've all signaled scheduling conflicts and instead are sending other high-ranking officials to attend the ceremony on their behalf.

Ironically, it may work out for the best if more Democrats decline to go to Trump's inauguration, given that the event has been moved indoors, ostensibly because of exceptionally cold weather, and space constraints will likely be an issue as attendees are packed into the Capitol Rotunda.
