DHS, Secret Service Blocking Release Of Records On Trump Assassination Attempt

America First Legal has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Secret Service and the Department of Homeland Security for concealing government documents on the July 13 assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump.

AFL contends that the DHS and USSS have blocked requests to obtain information about staffing shortages and employment standards amid whistleblower reports of understaffing and underqualified agents being used to protect Trump.

AFL also had requests for communication records between the DHS and USSS blocked and they are seeking records of communications specifically about the assassination attempt in Butler County, Pennsylvania.

There are a lot of questions that have yet to be answered about the first attempt on Trump's life and the reason for that seems to be federal agencies stonewalling.

Secret Service Obstruction

AFL contends that the Secret Service is “illegally concealing” documents despite AFL's proper request that meets all standards for expedited processing.

Gene Hamilton, executive director of AFL, issued a press release saying, "On July 13, the American people watched in horror as a lunatic attempted to assassinate former President, and current candidate for President, Donald Trump. Today, there is widespread and bipartisan acknowledgment that there were catastrophic failures that tragic day and in the weeks and months ahead of it."

While Trump survived the shooting, multiple people were hit and one supporter was killed shielding his family from the shots.

There is no excuse for federal agencies to be stonewalling and slowwalking requests for information. Americans deserve answers about what went wrong that allowed this tragedy to occur.

He continued by saying, "We are committed to obtaining these records so that the American people can see for themselves exactly what senior DHS leadership was prioritizing in its mission, and why more resources were not devoted to the protection of President Donald J. Trump.”

None of this has stopped the DHS and USSS from blatantly hiding information. They claimed that “there was no threat to life or safety of anyone” and that “there was no urgency to inform the public about government activity,” as to why they had withheld the records.

That last line about there being "no urgency to inform the public" tells Americans just how much the DHS and the Secret Service care about transparency.

Bipartisan Outrage

It's not just AFL and conservatives who want answers on Trump's shooting. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) said on Monday that, "I am reaching the point of total outrage because the response from the Department of Homeland Security has been totally lacking. In fact, I think it’s tantamount to stonewalling in many respects. The Department of Homeland Security has to be more forthcoming, not only to me, but to the American people.”

There are numerous pieces of disconnected evidence that shows that there were massive security failings and outright negligence by the Secret Service which led to the shooting.

In light of the 2nd attempt on Trump's life, the American people deserve answers sooner rather than later. At this point, it can be assumed that the Secret Service cannot be trusted to protect Trump in the lead-up to the election.

Should Trump win the presidency in November's election, everything will come out and those responsible for this obstruction as well as the original attack will be held responsible. However, should Trump lose, those responsible will escape accountability.
