Doug Emhoff says he's 'gutted' by Hamas murders of Israeli hostages
Six Israeli hostages, including one who was an American citizen, were executed by Hamas last weekend just prior to their lifeless bodies being discovered by Israeli troops in a tunnel in Gaza.
Second gentleman Doug Emhoff, the Jewish husband of Vice President Kamala Harris, told the congregation at his Washington D.C. synagogue that he was "gutted" over the murders, especially that of U.S. citizen Hersh Goldberg-Polin, the Associated Press reported.
Goldberg-Polin's parents, Jon and Rachel, spoke at the Democratic National Convention last month to raise awareness about the plight of their son and other Israelis held captive by Hamas since last October, and Emhoff insisted that he and his wife joined them in mourning the grievous loss of Hersh and the other slain hostages.
"I feel raw. I’m gutted."
"I haven’t been able to stop thinking about Hersh and his parents, or about the five others and their families," Emhoff said in his remarks at the vigil at the Adas Israel Congregation. "This is hard. I feel raw. I’m gutted."
"How you feel right now is how I feel," he continued. "And how we all feel is something Kamala hears directly from me. Hersh’s loss feels personal to the two of us. We’re both grieving."
Parents in mourning
The Times of Israel reported that Emhoff also shared how he and VP Harris had spoken with Goldberg-Polin's parents on Sunday after their murdered son had been discovered by Israeli troops and recalled how "their souls were torn apart, just like the garments we tear in mourning."
"They were comforting us. They were asking about the latest in the negotiations" for a ceasefire and hostage release deal, he continued. "They were asking how we can use this terrible moment to make progress. They told the vice president that they don’t want Hersh’s death to be in vain."
"At Hersh’s funeral yesterday, they still wore the tape marking the number of days the hostages have been in captivity: 332. I saw that and thought, 'The count was never about their son alone,'" the second gentleman said. "Jon and Rachel’s hearts have room to hold everyone. They are not giving up, and neither can we."
Emhoff further insisted that the Biden-Harris administration was working "around the clock to get a hostage and cease-fire deal done," and added, "The time to bring them home is now," per the AP.
Nearly 100 alive and dead hostages are still in Gaza
The Times noted that the bodies of the six slain Israeli hostages were found in a tunnel in Gaza on Saturday only a short time after they'd been executed with gunshots to the head, according to autopsy reports.
They were among the 251 hostages seized by Hamas terrorists during the horrific series of coordinated attacks in southern Israel on Oct. 7 last year, during which an estimated 1,200 Israelis were brutally murdered and thousands more were wounded and traumatized.
Of those 251 total captives, 109 were released alive during previous brief ceasefire agreements while eight more were rescued and the bodies of 37 others were recovered by Israeli troops.
It is believed that 97 hostages remain in Hamas custody in Gaza, including the bodies of 33 who are suspected to be dead, as well as two other Israeli civilians who've been held captive by Hamas for nearly a decade and the bodies of two Israeli soldiers who were killed while fighting in 2014.
