Gavin Newsom is campaigning for Harris, but is he helping or hurting?

Politico reports that California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) is now campaigning for the Democratic Party's new presidential nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris.

The big question, though, is whether Newsom is doing more to help Harris get into the White House or whether he is doing more to keep her out of the White House.

After all, Newsom has not exactly been successful in California.

That is, unless you change the definition of "success" to that of "failure."

The latest

Politico recently put out an article claiming that Newsom "is generating heat for Kamala Harris on gas prices."

"Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom is trying to do something about California’s high gas prices — and the state’s Republicans want to make sure the rest of the country knows about it," the outlet reports.

It continues, "Newsom’s bid during the last week of the state’s legislative session to expand regulators’ authority over oil companies is giving California Republicans an opportunity to hitch the state’s perpetually high fuel prices to the Democratic Party’s new standard bearer: fellow Californian Kamala Harris."

Indeed, with regard to more than just gas prices, critics have been attempting to link Harris to Newsom and to California.

Harris, after all, got into national politics only after making a name for herself in state politics, including as the former District Attorney of San Francisco and the former Attorney General of California.

This is the last thing Harris wants

The last thing Harris wants this election is to let American voters know that she has a record. We have seen in recent weeks how she has attempted to erase her record by, among other things, seeming to adopt policy positions that she has been firmly opposed to throughout her political career.

As one example, Harris even used former President Donald Trump's U.S.-Mexico border wall in one of her campaign ads, despite the fact that she has firmly opposed such a wall.

The problem with Newsom campaigning for Harris is that he cannot do so without others linking Harris to him and to the failures that California has experienced under both Newsom's and Harris's watch.

Trump recently brought this up, saying:

Look at California. You can’t go into San Francisco. It’s not liveable. Fifteen years ago, it was the best city in the country, one of the best cities in the world. And now, you can’t do anything. Look at what she’s done, and now she’s going to be president, and she’s going to do the exact same thing.

Newsom tried to claim that this was a compliment for both he and Harris, since, at the time, he was the mayor and Harris the District Attorney. The only problem is that this is Trump's whole point: things went downhill with Harris and Newsom in charge. And, we ought to expect more of the same from a Harris administration.
