Former President Donald Trump never fails to surprise and shock his critics, and that was proven once again over the weekend. 

According to Axios, the former president debuted a new line of Trump-branded sneakers, with some adorned in gold color and patriotic symbolism. The shoes were listed at $399.

While many laughed at the idea, Trump is the only one laughing at this point, as he managed to sell completely out of his new sneaker line within hours of announcing it at the annual Sneaker Con in Philadelphia.

In recent years, Trump-branded items have seen remarkable success as his massive base of supporters are typically excited and eager to get their hands on whatever he comes out with next.

What happened?

The new sneakers, called "The Never Surrender High-Top Sneaker," were made available to lucky buyers for $399 a pair. A $199 pair of low-top sneakers were also offered, along with a $99 bottle of "Victory47" perfume and cologne.

Notably, only 1000 pairs of the gold-lined sneakers were made available, and every single pair sold out, bringing in a whopping $400,000 alone.

Even more exciting for Trump fans? Ten random pairs of the gold-lined sneakers were autographed by Trump himself.

"I have some incredible people that work with me on things, and they came up with this, and this is something I've been talking about for 12 years, 13 years, and I think it's gonna be a big success," Trump correctly predicted regarding his new shoe line.

Many pairs of both styles of shoes were quickly listed on eBay, with some listed at over $5,000 a pair for die-hard collectors to have a chance to obtain at a premium.

Media reacts

Trump's sneakers went over fantastically with his supporters, with many praising the former president for such a unique idea. Some of his media critics suggested he might use the funds to pay his legal bills.

"Here’s one possibility. He’s now selling $400 gold-branded shoes. There they are. He went to, I think a sneaker convention in maybe, in Philadelphia, was it? … I don’t know if he’s trying to raise money for his legal bills or [if] this is just another branding opportunity," CNN's Jake Tapper said.

He added, "But he does make a lot of money off of branding. I think somebody bought an autographed pair last night there for several thousand dollars."

Only time will tell what Trump surprises his fans and critics with next.
