A California man was sentenced to nearly a year in jail for making threatening phone calls to former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Ca.) and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

44-year-old David Allen Carrier, of Concord, threatened to kill Pelosi in a January 2021 voicemail and told her, "You better resign."

Man sentenced for Pelosi threat

In December, Carrier pled guilty to two counts of threatening a federal official.

Prosecutors said he should get no jail time because he acknowledged wrongdoing and his "lapse of judgment."

They asked for Carrier to be sentenced to four years of probation, but the judge imposed an 11-month jail sentence, plus three years of supervised release. Carrier must also receive mental health and substance abuse treatment and avoid contact with Pelosi and Mayorkas.

A day after Joe Biden's inauguration, Carrier called Pelosi, who was Speaker at the time, and said, "You better resign, you piece of f------ s---."

"Cause we got a bullet and a rope with your f------ name on it. We're gonna f------ get you b----," he continued.

A year later, Carrier expressed violent outrage about the southern border in calls to Mayorkas.

"Tell that f--- Mayorkas to close the border before we citizens start killing those f------ illegal immigrants or we come looking for him and feed him to the dogs," Carrier said.

Pelosi out of the spotlight

The sentence shows that the government takes threats to "our democratic system" seriously, FBI Special Agent in Charge Robert Tripp said.

"Violent threats targeting elected officials also threaten our democratic system," he said. "Today's sentence demonstrates that anyone who sends politically motivated threats of violence to government officials will be investigated by the FBI and held accountable."

While no longer in the political spotlight, Pelosi has continued to grab media attention with her controversial stock trades, which are a regular source of speculation about insider trading. She has also continued to forcefully oppose Donald Trump and support Joe Biden in his battle for re-election.

Pelosi lost her House majority in 2022 and surrendered the Speaker's gavel after years as her party's leader in the House.

Pelosi's husband, Paul Pelosi, was assaulted during an invasion of their San Francisco home in 2022. David DePape, the attacker, faces a sentencing in April.
