The Hill reported that former Trump administration official Mike Gill was left in critical condition earlier this week after he was shot during an attempted carjacking.

According to the Washington Examiner, the man who shot Gill was previously brought up on felony charges that were later dropped.

Bloody rampage left one victim dead another wounded

Twenty-eight-year-old Artell Cunningham died in hospital early on Tuesday morning after engaging in a gun battle with police.

ABC 7 reported that prior to his death, Cunningham wounded Gill while attempting to carjack him at the 900 block of Washington, D.C.'s K Street NW on Monday evening.

Cunningham then went on to attempt a pair of additional carjackings, one of which resulted in a man being fatally shot and his vehicle taken.

This was not Cunningham's first violent encounter, as the Examiner cited court documents from January of 2023 which show that the Metropolitan Police Department was notified of gunshots close to a Washington, D.C. apartment building near Anacostia and Fairlawn.

Charge was reduced to a misdemeanor before being dropped altogether

Responding officers discovered that Cunningham was attempting to gain access to an apartment where his siblings were.

The suspect proceeded to become "physically aggressive," leading officers to detain him. In response, Cunningham threatened the officers, stating "that if he wasn’t released he was going to shoot them all."

"Defendant Cunningham then advised 'I swear all I need to do is make one phone call and you all will be dead.' 'I will kill each and every one of you,'" his arrest report recounted.

While Cunningham was promptly arrested for making felony threats, this was subsequently reduced to misdemeanor threats to do bodily harm.

The following month, the United States Attorney’s Office of the District of Columbia dropped all charges against Cunningham, resulting in his case being closed.

Gill described as "an amazing husband, father, friend and colleague"

Mike Gill served in the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission under former President Donald Trump, and ABC 7 noted that his family released a statement regarding the shooting.

It praised him for being "an amazing husband, father, friend and colleague" who "makes friends with everyone - and is always looking for opportunities to bring people together and make them feel included and loved."

Meanwhile, Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser issued a statement of her own condemning Cunningham's crimes as "senseless and tragic," adding, "We know that two families are experiencing an unthinkable tragedy."
