McCarthy successfully undermines push to vote on impeaching Biden

Fox News reports that the U.S. House of Representatives has just voted to send articles of impeachment against President Joe Biden back to House committees, and this appears to be thanks, in large part, to the efforts of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA).

The articles of impeachment come from U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO).

The allegations

Boebert filed the articles of impeachment against Biden on Tuesday. The articles concern the U.S.-Mexico border crisis.

Fox News separately reports:

The Republican lawmaker has contended Biden remains negligent on the U.S. border, failing to keep Americans safe from an influx of deadly fentanyl and criminal activity as well as failing to relieve the strain on the country’s immigration system.

Significantly, Boebert indicated that she decided to introduce the articles as a privilege resolution, which, in contrast to the more usual impeachment process, would force the entire House to vote on her articles of impeachment.

White House spokesperson Ian Sams responded to Boebert's efforts, writing:

Instead of working with @POTUS on the issues that matter most to Americans, like jobs and inflation and health care, extreme House Republicans are staging baseless political stunts that do nothing to help real people, just to try to get attention for themselves.

It turns out that the White House, however, was not the only one against Boebert's quick impeachment of Biden.

McCarthy's plea

USA Today reports that McCarthy, during a closed-door GOP meeting on Wednesday, pleaded with his fellow House Republicans to oppose, at least, the privileged resolution portion of Boebert's impeachment effort.

Instead, McCarthy argued that Boebert's articles ought to go through the more usual impeachment process, wherein they are first sent to House committees.

"I just think running something on the floor isn't fair to the American public without making the case and making the argument," McCarthy reportedly said during the meeting.

He added, "What majority do we want to be? Give it right back in two years or hold it for a decade and make real change?"

McCarthy succeeds

Later in the day on Wednesday, reports indicated that McCarthy had negotiated a deal with Boebert that, in part, involves sending her articles of impeachment to the House Judiciary and Homeland Security committees. It is unclear what else the deal entails.

On Thursday, the House voted in favor of sending Boebert's articles to these two committees. The final tally was 219 to 208.

It remains to be seen how the situation will progress from here.
