With the Super Bowl less than a week away, one of the star players just made the headlines thanks to his father's actions.

According to the Daily Mail, Patrick Mahomes Sr., father of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, was reportedly arrested on a DWI charge in Texas.

Mahomes Sr, 53, was arrested by the Tyler Police Department on Saturday night, making it at least his third DWI charge.

The quarterback's father is currently being held on a $10,000 bond.

What happened?

Mahomes Sr. apparently has a serious problem, as the Daily Mail noted that his arrest Saturday night marks the third time he's been caught driving while intoxicated.

The outlet reported:

Mahomes Sr. has been arrested a total of six times for driving while intoxicated, according to public booking records - twice in 2012, twice in 2018, once in 2019, and now once in 2024.

On his DWI charge in 2018, he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 40 days in county jail on weekends during 2019 and 2020.

He will now face serious consequences for his actions, as a third DWI arrest in Texas is classified as a third-degree felony. The maximum sentence is 10 years, and the maximum fine is $10,000, undoubtedly causing a headache for his all-star quarterback son.

According to the New York Post, Mahomes Sr. admitted to "having a few drinks" prior to his arrest, and reportedly had an open container of Coors Light in the console of his vehicle.

The Post noted:

Mahomes, whose son will quarterback the Chiefs against the 49ers in Super Bowl 2024 on Sunday, told police that he “had a few beers while watching a game at a local bar” when asked why he was drinking while driving, per the affidavit.

Mahomes Sr. is a former professional Major League Baseball pitcher who played with the New York Mets.

How did it happen?

Reports indicated that Mahomes Sr. was observed by a routine patrol unit driving slower than other vehicles on the road. Mahomes Sr.'s registration also expired in 2022, prompting police to pull him over.

"Based on the totality of the circumstances,” the arresting officer wrote, citing probable cause, "I believed Patrick was impaired to a perceptible degree while operating a motor vehicle in a public place."

While much of the media focus on the big game would have centered on the relationship between Taylor Swift and Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, the younger Mahomes will now have to deal with questions about his father's actions.

At the time of this publication, Mahomes Sr. was still being held in the county jail.
