U.S. Rep. Angie Craig (D-MN) is calling for President Joe Biden to withdraw from the 2024 presidential election.

Politico reports that Craig made the call on Saturday, July 6, 2024.

What makes this particularly significant is that Craig is a battleground Democrat.

Up until now, it has only been non-battleground Democrats who have called for Biden's withdrawal. But, Craig has just become the first battleground Democrat to do so.

Craig's statement

She posted it to her X account. It can be found, in its entirety, down below.

She captioned her statement, writing:

As an elected leader, I feel a responsibility to be honest about what I believe, even when it’s hard to hear. President Biden is a good man & I appreciate his lifetime of service. But I believe he should step aside for the next generation of leadership. The stakes are too high.

Craig goes into more detail in her actual statement.

She, in part, writes:

[G]iven what I saw and heard from the President during last week's debate in Atlanta, coupled with the lack of forceful response from the President himself following tha tdebate, I do not believe tha tthe President can effectively campaign and win against Donald Trump. This is not a decision I've come to lightly, but there is simply too much at stake to risk a second Donald Trump presidency.

Craig makes five

Although Craig is the first battleground Democrat to call for Biden's withdrawal, she, according to The Hill, is actually the fifth congressional Democrat to do so.

The outlet reports:

Craig now joins fellow House Democrats Reps. Lloyd Doggett (D-Texas), Mike Quigley (D-Ill.), Raúl Grijalva (D-Ariz.) and Seth Moulton (D-Mass.) in publicly calling for Biden to withdraw from the race in the wake of a rough presidential debate performance last week. Biden stumbled over his words and his voice sounded raspy during the debate.

There are also many more congressional Democrats who have expressed doubt about Biden's political future.

The congressional Democrats have even decided to hold a meeting, among themselves, to discuss Biden's political future.

It is looking more and more likely that Biden, in the coming weeks, could be forced - by his fellow Democrats - to call off his reelection campaign.
