Sasha Obama caught smoking cigarettes in photos, a habit President Obama 'struggled' with for years

Photographers recently caught former first daughter Sasha Obama smoking a cigarette while hanging out with friends in Los Angeles, California, according to OK! magazine.

That is a big deal to some given that the unhealthy habit was one that her father, former President Barack Obama, struggled greatly to overcome while serving in the White House.

In addition to being caught smoking, the photos of Sasha, 22, hanging out with her friends may have irked former first lady Michelle Obama because she has reportedly been urging her youngest daughter to get a job.

Caught smoking cigarettes

The New York Post's Page Six was the first to report that Sasha Obama was snapped sharing a smoke with friends after leaving a Labor Day party in L.A. on Monday.

While in West Hollywood, she was spotted wearing a bikini top with a long black skirt and flip-flops.

The outlet noted that this wasn't the first time that Sasha, who recently graduated from the University of Southern California, was seen in public smoking a cigarette -- a habit she presumably picked up from her father, who was caught or admitted to still occasionally smoking several times during his presidency after claiming that he had quit.

Barack's smoking habit

In 2013, USA Today reported that then-President Obama was overheard telling a United Nations official, "I haven't had a cigarette in 6 years ... that's because I'm scared of my wife."

The asserted time frame in that remark was dubious, especially given that just four years earlier in 2009 Obama had acknowledged during a press conference that "I've said before that as a former smoker, I constantly struggle with it. Have I fallen off the wagon sometimes? Yes. Am I a daily smoker, a constant smoker? No."

The outlet also noted that while Obama seemed to credit fear of the then-first lady with kicking his smoking habit, she had credited their daughters as influencing that decision in a 2012 interview. "I know that his ability to ultimately kick the habit was because of the girls, because they're at the age now where you can't hide," Michelle Obama told NBC News. "I think that he didn't want to look his girls in the eye and tell them that they shouldn't do something that he was still doing."

However, the Washingtonian reported in 2020 that Obama admitted in a memoir that despite the earlier claims to have quit smoking due to his wife and daughters, he continued to secretly smoke cigarettes at the White House throughout his presidency.

"He writes, somewhat lightheartedly, about how the stress of the White House led to his bad tendencies, like smoking, noting that he would sometimes smoke eight or nine or ten cigarettes a day and look for a 'discreet location to grab an evening smoke,'" the report revealed. "He said he quit smoking by 'ceaselessly' chewing nicotine gum after his daughter Malia 'frowned' after 'smelling a cigarette on my breath.'"

Mom wants adult daughter to get a job

As for the apparently carefree and jobless Sasha, OK! magazine cited unnamed sources who said the former first lady "isn't thrilled" about her youngest daughter's lack of gainful employment.

"She’s telling Sasha she needs to get out there and start interviewing for positions," the source told the outlet. "She’s heard a lot of her friends’ kids had jobs in line even before they graduated."

The source further indicated that Sasha wanted "to take the summer off to figure it out" but added that "Michelle suspects what she wants to do is hang out with her friends and party, and she’s not going to put up with that!"
