South Carolina mayor dies in car crash
A South Carolina mayor died in a car crash that occurred while police officers were pursuing him.
Fox News reports that the McColl mayor - 49-year-old George Garner II - ended up dying in the crash.
The incident took place just days after the town's entire police force resigned.
Suffice it to say that many questions are being asked about what exactly happened here.
Here's what we know:
The police pursuit took place on Tuesday afternoon. Leading the pursuit were the deputies of Marlboro County. For those unfamiliar with the area, McColl is a very small town of roughly 2,000 residents.
Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee has explained that police were unable to coral Garner during the pursuit, which ended when Garner collided - head-on - with an 18-wheeler truck. He did not survive.
The first question that many asked was why Garner was being pursued in the first place.
Here is what Garner had to say:
When the incident occurred Mr. Garner was being pursued by a Marlboro County deputy. The pursuit was not related to any laws being broken. The pursuit was taking place in an effort to protect the well-being of Mr. Garner.
The key phrase appears to be "to protect the well-being of Mr. Garner." To some, this has suggested that Garner, perhaps, was dealing with some health issues, but this has not been confirmed.
What about the resignations?
It was just days before the fatal collision that the entire police department of McColl resigned.
At the time, the Examiner separately reported:
The entire police department of McColl, South Carolina, resigned on Friday, leaving the town without any law enforcement officers. The chief of police said his resignation was due to a “hostile work environment” created by a city council member who allegedly cut significant amounts of the department’s budget.
At the time of this writing, there does not appear to be a connection between the resignations and the events that led to Garner's untimely death. But, the results of the investigation have still not been made public.
Marlboro County Emergency Management has released a statement describing Garner as "a remarkable individual."
It wrote:
On behalf of Marlboro County E911, we extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mayor George Garner. Our hearts are heavy during this difficult time, and we are keeping everyone affected in our thoughts and prayers. May you find comfort and strength in one another as you navigate this profound loss. Mayor Garner was truly a remarkable individual. He consistently treated everyone with warmth and respect, and his kindness left a lasting impact on those around him.
