Since taking office last month, President Donald Trump has led a campaign to shrink the size of America's federal bureaucracy.

Another example of that effort came late last week when it was revealed that 405 people were purged from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and placed on administrative leave.

Removed employees were affiliated with multiple DHS agencies

According to ABC News, just over half of the individuals in question worked for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Of the remainder, 130 were with the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), 50 worked for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), and another 10 were employed by the DHS Science and Technology Directorate.

What's more, another 12 Coast Guard employees who were focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts were given the option of going to the border and supporting security operations there.

A spokesperson for DHS explained to ABC News that the staffing reductions are part of a broader strategy being undertaken by the Trump administration.

Trump administration is "actively identifying other wasteful positions and offices"

"Under President Trump's leadership, we are making sweeping cuts and reform across the federal government to eliminate egregious waste and incompetence that has been happening for decades at the expense of the American taxpayer," the spokesperson was quoted as saying.

"Today's Department of Homeland Security personnel action will result in roughly $50 million in savings for American taxpayers and incalculable valuable toward accountability and cutting red tape," the spokesperson continued.

The spokesperson further stressed that the "DHS component leads identified non-mission critical personnel in probationary status.

"We are actively identifying other wasteful positions and offices that do not fulfill DHS' mission," the spokesperson went on to add.

DHS fired four officials for spending $59 million on housing illegal migrants

Last weeks' cuts came just days after the Daily Caller reported that DHS had fired four FEMA officials for spending $59 million to house illegal migrants in New York City luxury hotels.

"Effective immediately, FEMA is terminating the employment of four individuals for circumventing leadership to unilaterally make egregious payments for luxury NYC hotels for migrants," a statement from DHS read.

"Under President Trump and Secretary Noem’s leadership, DHS will not sit idly and allow deep state activists to undermine the will and safety of the American people," the statement added.

The four terminated individuals included FEMA's chief financial officer as well as a pair of program analysts and a grant specialist.
