Former President Trump's legal team has filed an appeal against a New York judge's ruling that found him liable for more than $350 million in damages in a civil fraud case brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James.

The total amount Trump is currently required to pay, including interest, exceeds $354 million, with daily post-judgment interest accruing at nearly $112,000.

The details

The case, which also targeted Trump's family and the Trump Organization, saw Judge Arthur Engoron ruling that Trump and the other defendants were guilty of various charges, including "persistent and repeated fraud," "falsifying business records," and "conspiracy to commit insurance fraud."

Engoron criticized Trump's behavior during the trial, noting his frequent refusal to directly answer questions and tendency to veer off-topic with lengthy and irrelevant speeches.

According to the judge, Trump's evasive responses severely undermined his credibility.

Trump's plan

Trump's attorney, Christopher Kise, indicated plans for an appeal, condemning the court's decision as unjust and politically motivated.

Kise argued that the evidence presented during the 44-day trial failed to support the allegations of fraud, emphasizing that Trump's financial statements accurately reflected his net worth.

James' office had sought additional penalties, including a five-year ban on Trump and his sons from applying for loans in New York and restricting the Trump Organization from engaging in real estate activities for the same period.

Engoron had previously ruled in September that Trump and his organization had committed fraud by inflating asset values and misrepresenting net worth to secure financing and deals.

The controversy continues

The legal battle between Trump and James has been ongoing, with both sides fiercely contesting the allegations and outcomes. Trump's appeal signals his determination to challenge the court's decision and clear his name of the charges leveled against him.

The case has drawn significant attention due to its high-profile nature, with implications for Trump's political future and the reputation of his business empire.

The outcome of the appeal will likely have far-reaching consequences, not only for Trump but also for the broader legal landscape in New York.

As the legal proceedings continue, both Trump and James remain firm in their positions, with no signs of backing down. The appeal process is expected to unfold over the coming months, while Trump continues to press ahead in his effort to return to the White House in a rematch against President Joe Biden.
