Trump could take Virginia: Report

It now appears that there is a legitimate chance that former President Donald Trump could win the state of Virginia in the upcoming presidential election.

Suffice it to say that this would be a huge win for Trump and the Republicans.

The Hill reports that Virginia has been won by the Democrats in every presidential election since former President Barack Obama's, back in 2008.

Virginia, with its 13 Electoral College votes, may not be the biggest prize in the country, but it is still important. Furthermore, a Republican victory in what has been a Democratic stronghold could be a sign of bad things to come for Biden and the Democrats.

The details

The possibility that Trump could take Virginia has been suggested by a recent poll released by Roanoke College. What the pollster found is that Trump and Biden are virtually tied in Virginia.

"President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are tied (42%-42%) in a head-to-head matchup in Virginia, while Biden holds a two-point lead (40%-38%) when other candidates are included, according to the Roanoke College Poll," the pollster reports.

It adds, "The Institute for Policy and Opinion Research (IPOR) at Roanoke College interviewed 711 likely voters in Virginia between May 12 and May 21, 2024. The survey has a weighted margin of error of 4.24%."

Analysts see these results as promising for Trump.

Harry Wilson, senior political analyst for IPOR, said that the poll's "results suggest that Virginia could be ‘in play’ in November."

Trump is looking to turn Virginia RED

To help put into perspective just how big of a statement this is - that Virginia could be "in play" in the upcoming presidential election - we could take a quick look at the state's results in recent elections.

In the 2020 presidential election, for example, Biden won the state of Virginia by 10 percentage points, or by about half a million votes. Hillary Clinton, on the other hand, beat Trump by about five percentage points in 2016.

So, this is a big deal, and Trump knows it.

Virginia is one of several traditionally blue states that Trump and his 2024 campaign are openly targeting with their campaign. Senior Trump campaign adviser Chris Lacivita recently said that Trump has "a real, real opportunity in expanding the map in Virginia and Minnesota."

It has to be admitted that there are still many months to go between now and the 2024 presidential election, meaning that a lot could change. But, still, this has to be encouraging news for Trump and the Republicans.
