Trump legal team slams Fani Willis in new court filing

Former President Donald Trump's legal team just blasted Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis.

The filing, according to Fox News, was in response to Willis' attempt to stop the appeal that Trump and his legal team have brought.

Trump is appealing Judge Scott McAfee's ruling that has allowed Willis to remain as a prosecutor on the Trump case, despite several scandals that have come to light involving Willis.

Trump's legal team says that Willis' attempt to stop the appeal is essentially a concession that she does not want any further probing into her alleged wrongdoing.

The "Hail Mary" motion

This is what Trump's legal team has decided to call Willis' motion to get the appeal dismissed: a "hail mary" motion.

Fox reports:

Last week, Wills argued that the Fulton County Superior Court found there was not sufficient evidence to support their claims that she had a conflict of interest, saying there is "no basis" to appeal Judge Scott McAfee's March ruling allowing the Atlanta prosecutor to stay on the case.

Willis, accordingly, is arguing that since there is "no basis" for the appeal, the appeal ought to be dropped.

This is not, however, how Trump's legal team sees Willis' motion.

Steve Sadow, Trump's lead counsel, has released a statement, saying:

President Trump has filed his response in opposition to the State’s meritless motion to dismiss the interlocutory appeal. The Georgia Court of Appeals granted us the right to appeal after due and proper consideration. The State’s "Hail Mary" motion is an obvious attempt to stop appellate review of DA Willis’ misconduct.

Background

This is all taking place in the criminal case that Willis has brought against Trump and several of his former associates. Willis claims that Trump and company committed various crimes when they attempted to challenge Georgia's results in the 2020 presidential election.

The case, though, has gotten virtually nowhere, and this is because Willis has found herself at the center of numerous scandals.

The most notable of these scandals is the one involving her lover, Attorney Nathan Wade. Willis selected Wade to be the lead prosecutor in this case against Trump, despite the fact that he was her lover. Then, she awarded him a lucrative contract which he allegedly used to take her on trips.

Given the obvious conflicts of interest, Wade has been removed from the case. The judge, however, has allowed Willis to remain, which is what Trump's legal team is trying to get changed.

Trump's legal team said, "We are optimistic that the Court will deny [Willis'] motion and proceed to favorably decide the appeal on the merits."
