Hillary Clinton says calling Trump's supporters deplorable was "too kind"
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton famously called her opponent's supporters a "basket of deplorables" in 2016, a move which some observers thought may have damaged her campaign.
Yet far from expressing regret, the failed presidential candidate recently doubled down by suggesting that her words were "too kind."
Clinton says she expressed "an important truth"
According to Breitbart, Clinton made that assertion in an op-ed piece adapted from her new book titled, "Something Lost, Something Gained: Reflections on Life, Love, and Liberty."
"In 2016, I famously described half of Trump’s supporters as 'the basket of deplorables,'" the former Democratic presidential nominee recalled.
"I was talking about the people who are drawn to his racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, Islamophobia — you name it. The people for whom his bigotry is a feature, not a bug," Clinton explained.
"It was an unfortunate choice of words and bad politics, but it also got at an important truth. Just look at everything that has happened in the years since, from Charlottesville to Jan. 6," she continued.
"The masks have come off, and if anything, 'deplorable' is too kind a word for the hate and violent extremism we've seen from some Trump supporters," Clinton went on to argue.
Former candidate defends "irredeemable" claim
Clinton also reflected on her assertion that some Trump supporters are "irredeemable," stating, "Part of me would still say this is objectively true."
"Just look at the lack of remorse from many of the Jan. 6 insurrectionists who've been convicted of sedition and other crimes," Clinton insisted.
"But another part of me wants to believe something else. I'd like to believe there's goodness in everyone and a chance at redemption, no matter how remote," she added.
Clinton has apparently had difficulty accepting her election loss eight years ago, something which could be seen in an interview she had earlier this month.
Clinton admits she can't "move on" from election loss
When speaking with CBS News reporter Erin Moriarty, Clinton said, "Since 2016, people have asked me, 'Will you ever be able to move on?' Move on? I wish!"

The 77-year-old former politician also indicated that she grew emotional upon learning that former President Donald Trump had been convicted of falsifying business records, saying, "I got tears in my eyes."
