Most polls suggest that President Joe Biden is trailing behind former President Donald Trump in the national popular vote.

This fact seems to have Biden's one-time boss concerns, as White House leakers say that former President Barack Obama is taking a behind-the-scenes role in the campaign.

Obama regularly on the phone with Biden and top officials

According to sources who spoke with The New York Times, Obama and Biden have begun engaging in regular telephone conversations.

What's more, the former president is also said to be in frequent contact with White House chief of staff Jeffrey Zient as well as high-ranking aides at the Biden campaign.

One unnamed senior aide was quoted as saying that Obama is "always" worried Biden will lose to Trump and is preparing to help him "eke it out" come November.

Meanwhile, CBS News noted that Obama and former President Bill Clinton organized a fundraising event on Thursday at New York's Radio City Music Hall.

Others at the event included musicians Queen Latifah, Lizzo, Ben Platt, Cynthia Erivo, and Lea Michele along with actress Mindy Kaling and "The Late Show" host Stephen Colbert.

In a Wednesday social media post, Biden characterized the fundraiser as an opportunity to "discuss what’s on the ballot in this election and how we will defeat Trump again."

The Telegraph reported that those wishing to attend the event had to pony up a $250,000 entrance fee while photos with Clinton, Obama, and Biden cost $100,000.

Trump calls on supporters to make donations of their own

The newspaper stated for his part, former President Trump reacted to the fundraiser by sending a text message out to his supporters.

"DON'T LET OBAMA SPIT IN YOUR FACE!" the former president was quoted as saying on Wednesday. "Tomorrow they aim to HUMILIATE us. It’s bad."

In a subsequent text, Trump warned of how the "Obama-Clinton cartel" is hoping that Thursday's fundraiser will be the "biggest victory" of their campaign.

The former president drew to a close by calling upon his base of "one million pro-Trump patriots" to open their wallets and make donations.

" A free people [claim] their rights, as derived from the laws of nature."
