Presumptive Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris will start campaigning with her running mate next Tuesday.

Politico reports that Harris will kick off a multi-state tour in Philadelphia with her VP pick.

It is widely expected that Harris will choose a white male "moderate" to broaden her appeal outside her liberal base.

Some see the Philadelphia kickoff as a sign that Pennsylvania's governor Josh Shapiro (D) will be the pick.

Kamala's VP pick

Shapiro hails from Philly's suburbs, an important battleground in the swing state.

Some Democrats think choosing Shapiro could help Harris in the state, where Republicans are launching devastating attacks on her past support of a fracking ban. Trump leads Harris by 2.7 points in a RealClearPolitics average of Pennsylvania polls.

Shapiro has been lustily auditioning for the role, stumping for Harris as a "tough-as-nails" prosecutor. But he demurred when asked about Harris' decision.

“The vice president has a very deeply personal decision to make right now: who she wants to run with, who she wants to govern with, and who can be by her side when she has to make the toughest decisions for the American people," he said. "I trust she will make that decision on her own terms when she is ready.”

Other choices

Harris is still vetting her choices, which also include Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

Some, like North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, have already dropped out of the running.

After next Tuesday's event in Philly, Harris and her running mate will spend the week campaigning in western Wisconsin, Detroit, Raleigh, Savannah, Phoenix and Las Vegas.

Harris has rapidly rallied the Democratic power elite and the mainstream media behind her in just over a week since Joe Biden dropped out.

Democrats hope Harris can ride a wave of momentum - aided by breathless, fawning press coverage - all the way to November.

So far, Republicans have focused on defining Harris, the first would-be non-white female president, as an extreme San Francisco liberal. Many expect her to choose a white man as her running mate to broaden her appeal in the swing states.

The Democratic party's convention begins in Chicago on August 19. But Democrats will nominate Harris before then in a virtual roll call starting Thursday.
