Though former President Donald Trump has long had a strong connection to the Lone Star State, particularly given his strong policies on the border, he has recently encountered a sticky situation that has yet to be resolved.

According to the Daily Mail, Trump could soon face serious sanctions from the El Paso city government over a sizable unpaid debt related to rally security services provided to his campaign.

Significant outstanding balance alleged

The outlet reports that Trump owes a total of $569,204.63 for police, fire, and ambulance services required by the U.S. Secret Service during a campaign rally in February 2019 held at the County Coliseum.

Subsequent neglect of the outstanding amount has caused the total debt to grow by another $98.787.58, according to Laura Cruz-Acosta, a spokesperson for the municipality.

As a result of the ongoing situation, city leaders have enlisted the aid of attorneys, and legal action may follow.

For now, however the city has relied on its own efforts to collect the sizable sum, though it remains unclear whether those will bear fruit anytime soon, and if not, the city has even floated the idea of banning Trump from entering into the city.

Mayor Dee Margo, speaking on the matter back in 2019, said, “I'm hopeful they'll pay. I'm hopeful they'll do what's right. People that don't pay their bills – that's a character integrity issue.”

Proliferation of similar debts

The Mail further noted that El Paso is not the only city currently awaiting repayment from Trump for services rendered in support of campaign events.

Dorchester County, South Carolina has reported an outstanding debt of $26,071, Billings, Montana says it is owed $45,000, Erie, Pennsylvania wants $35,129, and those are just some of the localities that claim Trump's obligations have yet to be met.

According to the Center for Public Integrity, it is possible that there are a number of other cities that simply decided not to bill the campaign for police and other safety costs, whether because they have policies preventing them from doing so or because they are already aware of the difficulties involved in receiving payment.

Nashville, Tennessee, on the other hand, adopted a more proactive stance by requiring Trump to pay for police services in advance and to sign a contract covering any other potential charges.

Equal opportunity delinquencies

It should be noted, however, that it is not just Trump who appears to have skirted certain campaign-related debts, as Fox 11 reports that the city of Green Bay, Wisconsin, is still attempting to collect sums from prior presidential campaigns lodged by former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Sen. Bernie Sanders.

According to CBS News, Kamala Harris also racked up sizable debt of this nature during her ill-fated 2019 presidential campaign, missing payment deadlines along the way before eventually paying her tab.

Whether Trump will attempt to clear up these outstanding sums in order to prevent ongoing negative publicity and possibly an outright ban or will simply allow more debts to be incurred on the road to Election Day, only time will tell.
