Gov. Ron DeSantis will appoint Sen. Marco Rubio's replacement
According to President-elect Donald Trump and multiple media reports, Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio, upon Senate confirmation, will become the president's secretary of state.
According to Fox News, that would mean Rubio would vacate his Senate seat in the newly-controlled Republican majority Senate, leaving Gov. Ron DeSantis the power to replace him.
The Florida governor would select Rubio's replacement and appoint him or her to serve until a special election to be held in 2026.
Rubio had just been reelected in 2022 for a six-year term in the upper chamber. The special election would take place at the end of Rubio's current term in 2026.
What's happening?
Whoever DeSantis appoints will serve until 2026 and will be eligible to run for reelection in the next cycle, which would be in 2028. That person could face challengers, though.
What will be most interesting is who DeSantis chooses to fill the seat. He holds the power to choose literally anyone he wants.
Fox News noted:
DeSantis can appoint whoever he desires to fill the seat, including himself or his wife Casey, and many names have already surfaced as potential replacements barring a last-minute change of heart from Trump.
However, there are several top contenders for the vacant seat, including Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody. She's held the role of Florida AG since 2019 and was reelected easily in 2022.
U.S. District Judge Roy Altman is another top contender for the coveted Senate seat.
"Many GOP senators are talking about Judge Roy Altman for Marco Rubio’s replacement," Fox News correspondent Lucas Tomlinson recently said. "He’s a Trump-appointed judge in South Florida, Venezuelan immigrant, and Yale Law grad."
More possibilities
The governor's chief of staff, James Uthmeier "previously served as DeSantis's chief of staff and as a campaign manager for his presidential campaign. Some have speculated that Uthmeir could serve as a placeholder in the Senate for two years, at which point DeSantis could run for the seat after his term as governor ends at the end of 2026," Fox reported.
Notably, Republican National Committee Co-Chair Lara Trump has also been floated as a possibility.
"She is a staunch conservative who just helped deliver a sweeping electoral mandate for Republicans in her role as co-chair of the RNC," Alabama GOP Sen. Katie Britt.
Only time will tell who the governor picks.
