New report says Cuomo engaged in 'medical malpractice' during COVID

A new report issued by the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic on Monday said that former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) engaged in "medical malpractice" during the COVID-19 pandemic and then tried to cover it up.

Specifically, the practice of sending COVID-positive nursing home residents back into their residences once they were stabilized and admitting new nursing home patients who tested positive for COVID-19 was later shown to spread the virus to other residents and caused many deaths among the elderly populations there.

The report found that Cuomo “knowingly and willfully made false statements” to the subcommittee “on numerous occasions” about the nursing home deaths.

Because of these false statements, the subcommittee referred Cuomo to the Justice Department for criminal prosecution.

"Predictable but disastrous consequences"

At least 9,000 COVID-19 positive patients were admitted to New York nursing homes between March 25 and May 8, 2020 as a result of Cuomo's executive order, which was rescinded six weeks later.

“This unjustifiably exposed vulnerable nursing home populations to COVID-19, causing predictable but disastrous consequences — including excess deaths,” the report said.

Most states prohibited any COVID-19 positive patients from being admitted to nursing homes, so Cuomo's order was an outlier.

Cuomo later put out a report blaming the excess deaths on nursing home staff, which the subcommittee said was "heavily edited" to show more causality.

"Flat-out false"

A Cuomo spokesperson said the report was "flat-out false" and pointing out that New York came out 39th in pro rata nursing home deaths by the end of the pandemic.

“This is the same weak gruel the MAGA Republicans on this committee have been peddling for months if not years,” spokesman Rich Azzopardi said in a statement. “From the very beginning, this has been an abuse of power and a waste of taxpayer money aimed at punishing perceived political enemies — like Dr. Fauci, Governor Cuomo, and ‘the deep state’ — that does nothing to make us more prepared for the next pandemic.”

The Justice Department does not have to prosecute Cuomo.

Still, the report could hurt Cuomo's chances at a successful run for New York mayor, if he decides to run.

Cuomo's candidacy will also hinge on the public forgetting that he was found to have sexually harrassed 13 women as governor.

Why any voter would want to give him another chance to hold any elected office at this point is beyond me.
