It's another reminder to appreciate every day on this earth and NEVER take your friends or family for granted.

On Valentine's Day, two people were killed and several others were injured in a fiery crash inside a tunnel in Wyoming.

The horrific accident occurred along Interstate 80, according to FoxWeather.com.

"Terrible Crash"

According to USA Today, "The Wyoming Department of Transportation said the 'multi-vehicle crash' on westbound I-80 occurred at 11:37 a.m. local time. Photos posted by Wyoming Highway Patrol showed a massive plume of black smoke coming out of a tunnel entrance.

Wyoming Highway Patrol indicated the two confirmed fatalities happened outside the tunnel. They added that a fire was active at the scene, causing vehicle tires to explode from the heat.

Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon announced he was monitoring the crash and said that state resources are being used to support local recovery efforts.

"I am praying for all concerned and their families," Governor Gordon said. "I have directed the appropriate agencies to work with the local communities to offer aid and assistance to the injured, to those who have suffered loss, and in support of efforts to resolve ongoing concerns."

The 1,100-foot tunnel had to be evacuated and authorities have contained the crash site.

Part of I-80, which stretches across America from California to New Jersey, is closed until further notice.

"My heart is broken for the families and loved ones of the victims of this terrible crash," transportation department director Darin Westby said. "My thoughts and prayers go out to all who are involved. WYDOT and WHP remain on scene to assist local emergency responders and provide additional support and traffic control."

Hospitalizations

The casualties from the incident didn't stop with just the two people who passed away:

Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County said it was treating victims of the "mass casualty incident" and urged people to refrain from visiting the hospital unless they were an immediate family member or had an emergency.

"We appreciate the support and understanding of our community during this challenging time," the hospital wrote on social media. "Updates will be provided as more information becomes available."

The focus after the crash has been on protecting the structural integrity of the tunnel so that this tragedy doesn't lead to an even bigger one.

As the pileup inside the tunnel got worse and worse, the fire and explosions grew. Authorities are worried that the explosions could have damaged the integrity of the tunnel.

As a result, WYDOT geologists and bridge engineers are being called in to assess the tunnel infrastructure before reopening.
