DANIEL VAUGHAN: Trump Should Punish The ICC With The Strongest Means Possible
The Hamas terrorist attacks on October 7, 2023, clarified the world for many. Either you stand against evil when it's filming itself on GoPro cameras performing great debauchery, or you're willing to stand against that. It's not a complicated equation. It's a red line, and international institutes are failing it left and right. It's time for the United States to lead the world past those institutions and into something new.
The International Criminal Court sits atop the absurdities, announcing "arrest warrants" for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. The ICC alleges that Netanyahu and Israel have committed grave war crimes in Gaza in attacking the terrorist group Hamas, which still holds Israeli and American hostages - including children.
The ICC's stance is not one of human rights. If they stood for that, they'd be for ending a terrorist organization like Hamas that builds military installations in schools, hospitals, and civilian homes. Israel has rescued hostages being held by journalists and doctors. Hamas uses children as human shields. And none of this touches the barbarity of Hamas during the October 7 attacks, in which they raped, butchered, and murdered their way across the countryside.
The law isn't a problem for the ICC, either, because it invents everything in its claims. As the Wall Street Journal notes, "The ICC only has jurisdiction over its member states, but Israel isn't a member and Gaza isn't a state. The court nonetheless conjures a State of Palestine. It then deems the state's borders to include Gaza and lets the Palestinian Authority sign for the territory Hamas has controlled since 2007. International "law" is malleable when it targets Israel."
Many in Trump's orbit have promised action on the ICC, and they should. The ICC is a fake institution filing the world with some of the deepest-rooted anti-semitism and blood libel in the past hundred years. The ICC has no eyes for what Iran has and is doing, nor any of the other blood authoritarian states in the world. But once Jews enter the equation, the ICC starts banging its drum.
The Trump administration should take every lever of power it has to cripple the ICC and punish it for stepping out of line in this egregious fashion. However, it's not the only institution that needs to be checked - the United Nations should be right behind.
Specifically, the UNRWA is nothing more than a Western-funded terrorist organization. Multiple investigations have rooted out members of the UNRWA, which took part in the October 7 terrorist attacks. More recently, a UNRWA student was found on video saying that the solution for Jerusalem was to "kill the Jews."
UN Watch has other documentation showing the UNRWA in a deep league with terrorist organizations. The United States not only needs to end funding to the UNRWA, it needs to kick all members out of this country and treat it as nothing more than an arm of Hamas or any terrorist group. It is insane that we are sending a single penny or any rhetorical support to an organization bent on eradicating Jews.
These two organizations are the face of the international effort pushing back against Israel's fight against pure evil. In a moment of great crisis, they revealed their true colors, showing the world what these international organizations support. Instead of aiding the helpless, they want to push aid into the hands of Hamas and end any military strikes against Iranian proxies.
The incoming Trump administration needs to cut off funding immediately and start pressing everyone else to follow. The United States needs to lead because the current progressive leaders of the free world are failing. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told everyone that he'd abide by the ICC's ruling and arrest Netanyahu.
The Trump administration will have to lead because no one else will. Saying you will "abide" by a ruling that is a blood libel, at best, is a sign of deep depravity. The ICC cannot be saved in any form and should be repudiated in the strongest terms. George W. Bush was entirely correct in pulling the United States out of the ICC in 2002. It's time for the United States to take the following steps in crippling it, the UNRWA, and the rest of the corrupt international bureaucracies.
The Editors of National Review are calling for sanctions on the ICC. That's a strong start. Congress is making some moves in that direction. It's not an end, though. The United States needs to cripple the power of these organizations and undercut them wherever possible. They do not stand for justice or the international order.
October 7 was an easy test for most people. The ICC, UNRWA, the UN, and others are failing that test in spectacular fashion. We should work to ensure their failures don't impact the lives of real people ever again.
