President Joe Biden spoke out against attacks by Hamas on Israel, calling it the deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust.

Biden's Wednesday speech also noted that at least 22 Americans have died in the terrorist attacks.

Biden's words

“This attack was a campaign of pure cruelty — not just hate, but pure cruelty — against the Jewish people,” Biden said, according to the Associated Press.

"Beyond the 22 known to have been killed, the State Department said at least 17 more Americans remain unaccounted for in a war that has already claimed more than 2,200 lives on both sides," the report added.

Supporting Israel

"The US president has pledged to give new military assistance to Israel and said the attack by Hamas on Saturday was the 'deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust,'" the Guardian noted.

"Speaking at a Jewish community event in Washington DC, Biden reiterated that he backed Israel but also called on Israel prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu to 'operate by the rules of war,'" it continued.

Hostages too

"Beyond the 22 known to have been killed, the State Department said at least 17 more Americans remain unaccounted for in a war that has already claimed more than 2,200 lives on both sides," Fox 13 Seattle reported.

"A 'handful' of U.S. citizens are among the estimated 150 hostages captured by Hamas militants during their shocking weekend assault on Israel, White House national security spokesman John Kirby said Wednesday," it noted.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken has already traveled to Israel this week to show his solidarity with Israel.

Military assets from the U.S. have also been repositioned closer to Israel to provide support if needed, including the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower and USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier.

Concerns also continue over the role of Iran in supporting the Hamas attacks against Israel. The investigation is ongoing, but the nation is allegedly behind at least some of the weapons obtained by Hamas terrorists to use in battle against Israel since the Saturday attacks began.

Israel has now turned on the offensive, launching its own airstrikes on Hamas targets in Gaza, sealing off the area while demanding a return of all hostages.
