Bragg signals willingness to move trial date if Trump prosecuted on January 6

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said during a WNYC radio interview on Friday that he could support moving the date of former President Donald Trump's trial on falsifying business records to make room for a federal prosecution related to January 6, when thousands of people breached the Capitol following a rally for Trump.

Bragg said his office would "take a broad look at what justice requires" and likely support moving the New York trial date "if and when" Smith indicts Trump on the January 6-related charges.

Bragg's trial is scheduled for March 25 and a federal trial alleging that Trump mishandled classified documents is scheduled for May.

Trump could also be charged in Fulton County for allegedly trying to overturn the election there so that it would go in his favor.

Coordination of charges

Bragg said that he had no power to change the trial date on his own, but that when there a lot of different charges pending, judges often coordinate.

"There may be other cases coming," Bragg said. "If and when that happens, we'll see what happens to the schedule. We have a firm trial date, our judge has been clear about that. But based upon experience—I've been a federal prosecutor, a state prosecutor and now obviously local—in matters like this, judges will confer."

"I take a very broad lens on justice," he continued. "We'll obviously follow the directives of our court, but won't sit on ceremony in terms of what was charged first ... Ultimately the judges set the trial schedule. I will say that, as a federal prosecutor, as a state prosecutor, I have had times where you're doing schedule coordination."

In so many words, Bragg seems to be admitting that his case against Trump is weaker than the others brought so far and than those being considered.

Trumped-up

Bragg was the first one to charge Trump with something, but his charges were largely panned as being not only minor, but also accused him of twisting the law around and turning what would have been misdemeanors that couldn't even be charged under the statute of limitations into felonies.

While Bragg doesn't seem to have a great chance of getting a conviction, he opened the floodgates and may have influenced other prosecutors to bring their own, potentially stronger charges.

There is speculation that Democrats wanted to bring the charges--any charges--against Trump because they knew it would keep his popularity high and make him the Republican nominee.

They may think Trump is the most beatable Republican candidate, especially since they managed to beat him once.

Bringing Trump down

The establishment is going to use all of its power to bring Trump down, make no mistake.

Let's hope the American people don't let themselves be manipulated into doing exactly what they want.
