Brazilian lawmaker assassinated
A disturbing video has been released showing a Brazilian lawmaker getting assassinated outside of his home.
The victim, according to the Daily Mail, is 57-year-old Marcos de Araujo.
This is tragic on many levels, including the fact that the assassination took place as De Araujo was talking to his mother-in-law, 75-year-old Marina Maia.
She too was injured in the shooting.
Here's what happened:
The incident took place just outside of de Araujo's Brazilian home on Thursday evening. The assassins snuck up on de Araujo while his back was turned.
Per the Daily Mail:
Marcos de Araujo, 57, and a woman had their backs turned to the killers and were talking to his mother-in-law, Marina Maia, 75, when two gunmen ran up and opened fire on Thursday night.
De Araujo ended up being shot nine times, and Maia, the mother-in-law also was shot multiple times.
The Daily Mail continues:
The lawmaker was shot at least four times by one of the assailants as the woman sitting next to him carrying a dog ran for cover. The assailant’s accomplice ran over and fired multiple shots at de Araujo while Maia remained in her chair and covered her head from the flying bullets. De Araujo, who was shot nine times, was confirmed dead at the scene. Maia was shot in the buttocks and her back.
Although de Araujo died at the scene, Maia did not. She was rushed to a local hospital. At the time of this writing, however, her medical condition is unknown.
The investigation continues
After carrying out the assassination, the suspects took off on a motorcycle. At the time of this writing, they have still not been captured. A police investigation is underway.
This all comes after de Araujo was reelected to a fourth term to the city council of Tabuleiro do Norte.
This is not the first assassination of its kind to take place in recent months. About four months before this incident, Francisco de Oliveira, the former mayor of Joao Dias Brazil was also killed in a shooting.
The Daily Mail reports:
De Araujo’s murder comes four months after Francisco de Oliveira, the mayor of the northeast city of João Dias, and his father were gunned down. De Oliveira, who was seeking reelection, was making stops at the homes of voters the morning of August 27 when the gunmen got out of two vehicles and opened fired.
De Oliveira and others died in the incident.
